Q: Complimentary iCloud storage threat

Hello. Apple has emailed me, and apparently other former .Mac and Mobileme users who haven't purchased iCloud storage, telling me that I am using too much of the free allocation on iCloud and therefore on September 30th it will stop working.

In order to find out how much storage I am using, I apparently have to go into System Preferences and go to iCloud there.

However I don't have iCloud in System Preferences, presumably because I'm on OS10.6.8, which predates it.

So I don't know how much stuff to delete and how to find out at what point I've deleted enough to not have Apple removing my email access. I have no idea what to do about any of this. I've just wasted lots of time trawling through Apples help sites and they all state simply to access System Preferences. I imagine a lot of other people will be in the same situation as me now. Can anyone help?

Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2.66GHz

I don't think the iDisk as such can be involved as nothing stored manually in iDisks found its way into iCloud upon migration. However calendars and contacts may have done: these can be checked on the iCloud website and the contents deleted manually - this won't affect calendars or contacts on the Mac as no syncing is possible under Snow Leopard. If there is calendar data going back a long way plus a lot of contacts it might be contributing noticeably to the data stored.

I doubted iDisk's involvement also, but straws are to be grasped at sometimes.

I also doubt Contacts and Calendars involvement, they are just too small, megabytes maybe, gigabytes I have trouble believing.

The OP states that Mail is the only thing up there, also states that 'almost' all mail has been removed, so this makes no sense whatsoever and I believe that we do not have the whole story.

I've solved the problem by borrowing an iPhone and signing into iCloud on this (with the owners permission of course) so I can now see how much I'm deleting and how much is left. There is nothing on there other than the mail folder and  I'm definitely well under the limit. I can only assume the last mail Apple sent me stating I was using over 5GB was some sort of automated thing that was sent before I deleted all this, even though it arrived about half an hour later. Obviously they email me again I'll have to rethink this, but at least I can now control the use of storage on the iCloud till I've got it regulated properly.

The email account used to be paid for in the days of dotMac and I'd be happy to do so again If I found something suitable. I shall have to look into this, but of course this'd take longer than till September 30th! Thanks for all the assistance on here, without which I'd really just have been searching for clues without knowing how to do so.
