I had the same issue with my late 2008 macbook.  I turned off bluetooth from the menu bar and then opened network preferences.  I removed blutooth and wifi from the left hand list and then applied the changes.  I rebooted the mac and then created the wifi connection again (I didn't do the bluetooth).  I have powered on my macbook at least 4 times and the wifi remains okay.

Thanks! This really worked. I think that removing bluetooth is not necessary.. who knows.

OMG how easy of a fix this was for something that's been driving me crazy for a week! THANK YOU, Helloson! That simple fix worked and after adding Wi-Fi back I didn't even have to re-enter our network password, just added it back and BOOM wi-fi back on. You're a lifesaver

None of the supplied "answers" worked for me. After a restart, I was unable to turn on the wireless function. Deleted prefs; boot into Safe Mode and then restart; remove from power and let rest for 3-10 minutes; PRAM and SMC reset; deleting wifi and bluetooth from within Network settings, then adding anew; none of it made an bit of difference.

THIS WORKED:  I reinstalled 10.8 over 10.8.5. Then I applied the 10.8.4 COMBO updater.

That works for my 2008 Macbook. Now it has WiFi again.

Do not update to 10.8.5 is the only sure-fire solution I found.

Further update - I had been having the WiFi problems with 10.8.5 (see my posts above), went back and downloaded the Combo 10.8.5 update from Apple Downloads, and initially my WiFi was working.

However... tonight I was back at that Panera Bread Company restaurant for dinner, and wanted to start up under ML (my primary partition I use is Snow Leopard 10.6.8, ML is on the other - 680GB - partition).

System could not find the WiFi (and I'm sitting within 20 feet of their router). I rebooted with the Recovery Drive for Mountain Lion, ran Disk Utility and repaired permissions, as well as repairing the ML partition. The permissions repair found a bunch of groups in Application Support that were set for zero instead of 80, but that was about all it found.

After reading some of the related topics on the 10.8.5 WiFi 'curse', I checked under Apple System Profiler, and my "Airport" (had to check from Snow Leopard, due to the problem with no having the WiFi turn on/work properly (which was mentioned earlier). My 'card' is the same one that ABrody mentioned:

    Card Type:AirPort Extreme  (0x14E4, 0x8D)
      Firmware Version:Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.131.42.4)

Time to go find my 10.8.4 Time Machine backup.

Just love it when software is (not..) adequately tested before release.

Thanks, Apple. I remember those who treat me well, and have a long memory for those who do not...

This is a software issue of 10.8.5.....

the OS may or may not load the the driver accurely on MacBook Alluminum!

I have 20 different disks with 10.6.8, 10.8.4 & 10.8.5 OSX on it (the issue is only in 10.8.5 and the wifi may or may not work OK.... if you restart repetitively, some times the wifi loads ok)

The only assured solution is install 10.8.4 and wait for a fixed update.

Yep, exactly what I'd figured (going back to 10.8.4) did fix things, vs. trying other stuff with 10.8.5.  At least on OS X, we have the capability to 'downgrade' to a TM backup with an earlier version.

Maybe - if we're lucky - on Mavericks, this WiFi glitch will get fixed for the early Unibody MBP's. I certainly hope so!

Apple just released the supplemental update for 10.8.5, but I'm not sure if the Wi-Fi problem was been solved because I dont wanna reinstall everything again (I only have one disk at this moment and not using Time Machine).

I just applied supplemental update for 10.8.5 and still not working (MacBook, 13 inch, Aluminum, Late 2008).  I've tried all suggested options and none seem to help.  This all started after the latest update I applied earlier today.  As some have seen, removing it and adding it back after reboot works but only for that session.  Once you restart it again after shutting down it goes back to not being able to turn on the WiFi.

Some suggested this was hardware, but I disagree.  To much of a coincidence that so many of us are having the identical same issue.  To go one step further if it was hard ware it would not repeat to work after one removes WiFi from network preferences, reboots and adds it back again.

Apple, please don't let us down.  We've all purchased Apple products so we don't need to write these kind of emails for basic functionality.

Apple support, please provide us an update of where this is on getting fixed since this is basic to using our MacBook.

    Thanks!

10.8.5 has also killed the WI-FI on my 15" Late 2008 Macbook Pro. Installing the 10.8.5 supplemental update did not fix the problem. I have tried reinstalling the 10.8.5 combo update, deleting WiFI from the Network Preferences menu and then reinstalling it, deleting the WIFI Airport preference files, the above mentioned Bluetooth fix, resetting SMC, resetting PRAM and repairing disk permissions. None of these has fixed the problem. Its quite a strange bug as it will kill my WIFI on some system restarts and work totally fine the next. Its certainly not consistent but never the less still annoying. I really hope apple acknowledges the matter and releases a fix for this soon. I really don't want to migrate to Mavericks right now, especially if that does not guarantee a fix for this issue.

FYI I also advised Apple of this issue at https://www.apple.com/au/contact/feedback.html

I suggest those with this problem do the same.

At this point it seems the only real fix is to downgrade back to 10.8.4. If soemone knows an easy way to do this without loosing data it would be great if you can share the process.

    Thanks

    Hi all,

    I have a fix!

just got off the phone with tier 2 apple tech support.

I have a mackbook 2008 and when I upgraded to 10.8.5 my wifi was completely broken.

Went through all of the typical reset PRAM, remove battery...etc.

    Here is the fix:

    Go to network prefs

    remove the existing wifi configuration

         select wifi

select the - (minus sign) at the bottom left of the window.

Select Shut Down from the Apple menu.

    Restart the computer.

Open Network prefs and select the + (Plus sign) at the bottom left of the window

For me, WIfi connection was populated already.

    Select Create

Go to the menu bar and you should now see all of your typical networks displayed.

    Select your network.

Waallla! Sanity restored and your Macbook is back in action.

    Have a great day!!
