Q: Most of apps (except Chrome) can't connect to the Internet

Safari, App Store, iTunes, and other applications can't connect to the Internet.

I've seen my proxy settings and they are all unchecked.

I've done a reset on my router and still no progress.

 

Safari keeps showing "can't establish a secure connection to the server...". Internet connection seems to be working fine because Chrome loads any website with no errors. Also, I've used my phone, tablet, PC to test the internet connection and they all got connected.

iTunes and App Store won't even connect. Now I can't buy and update apps, music, etc.

 

How can I be able to solve this problem?

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.

    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.

     

    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
       
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

     

    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

     

    After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    So I did check the connection in Safe Boot. I've tried iTunes, AppStore, Safari and Chrome. Same problem exists. Only Chrome was able to connect successfully.

    Step 1

    Follow the instructions in this support article to change your DNS settings. If there's no change, revert the settimgs.

    Step 2

    Launch the Keychain Access application. In the Keychains list, there should be an item named System. If not, select

        
    File â–¹ Add Keychain
      
    from the menu bar and add the following item:
      
    /Library/Keychains/System.keychain
      
    From the Category list in the lower left corner of the window, select Certificates. Look carefully at the list of certificates in the right side of the window. If any of them has a a blue-and-white plus sign or a red "X" in the icon, double-click it. An inspection window will open. Click the disclosure triangle labeled Trust to disclose the trust settings for the certificate. From the menu at the top, select
      
    When using this certificate: Use System Defaults
      
    Close the inspection window. You'll be prompted for your administrator password to update the settings. Revert all the certificates with non-default trust settings.
       

    From the menu bar, select

      

    Keychain Access â–¹ Preferences â–¹ Certificates

     

    There are three menus in the window. Change the selection in the top two to Best attempt, and in the bottom one to CRL.

      

    Next, select the login keychain. Delete any expired or otherwise invalid certificates.

     

    Log out, log back in, and test.

    Step 3

     

    Launch the Activity Monitor application. Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar of the Activity Monitor window, if not already selected. Enter "ocspd" (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Is a process with that name listed?

     

    If not, back up all data, then triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

     

    /var/db/crls

     

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select

    Go â–¹ Go to Folder...

    from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

    Move all the files in the folder that opens to the Trash. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot, empty the Trash, and test.

    For step 1, the first time I loaded a page using Safari it was successful. But after that, the problem went back.

    So I proceed to Step2 and the problem still exist.
    I was about to try Step 3 but I didn't understand the instruction. There was actually a process named "ocspd" when I typed it in the filter, what do I do next after that?

    Same problem here, all of a sudden internet connection on Apple apps on my Macbook Pro stopped working. Specifically Safari (which only connects to yahoo.com) Messages, Appstore and itunes. Funny but mail seems to work though. I've tried step 1 & 2, for step 3 I have the same problem with kevmartin. Internet is working perfectly fine on chrome. Tried a different internet provider too. I can't remember updating anything.

    Count me in. All the Apple apps stopped working while Firefox and Chrome work well. None of these steps helped too.

    Two questions:

     

    Are you sure you tested in safe mode? You should have seen a gray progress bar during startup, and the words "Safe Boot" in the login screen. If you're not sure, please try again.

     

    Are there any other devices on the same network, and if so, do they have the same problem?

    1. Yes the words "safe boot" is in the login screen.

    2. Other devices such as PC, ipad and iphone on the same network is working perfectly

    1. Yes I'm perfectly sure I tested in safe mode (gray progress bar and the words "Safe Boot" in the login screen).
    2. Other devices like phone, tablet, PC are connected to the same network with no problem.

    Tried it on safemode. No dice. Also, all the other devices can connect on the internet, and my iPhone can open the app store and iTunes store.

    I manage to get Safari working again, I think it has something to do with the settings of the router. I'm using D-LINK DIR-655. I change the wireless settings and although the safari connection is intermittent, it now works. Unfortunately Appstore and Itunes still does not work. I'll be trying to use my office's network to see if its really the router that's causing this trouble. Hope we could find a total solution to this problem.

    Referring to Step 2 above, please select the System Roots keychain and do as you did with the System keychain. Then select the login keychain. Does it contain any certificates?

    Hi, I'm now using my iPhone's shared LTE connection. Everything is working perfectly. I guess the problem at home is either the router or the internet connection. Hope this helps. Good day everyone.

    Maybe this is a problem with Globe Telecoms (internet service provider) again.  The other week it was fine. 

     

    Just to share, my IPad and IPhone is connected to the same router and it can surf and do appstore just fine.  But this Macbook can't.  I just use chrome to post this reply.

     

    I have already restored mountain lion.  Erased everything and restored it yesterday.  Unfortunately the problem was not solved.  The weird thing is that restoring mountain lion needed internet connection and OSX Restore successfully restored everything.  It downloaded files from the internet (which took about 6 hours), and finished configuring OSX with no problems.  But from the clean install Safari, iTunes and Appstore still can't connect.

     

    I have tried to ping www.google.com from the terminal and it gives out replies.  But accessing it from safari fails.  I tried to put in the IP address from the ping reply in safari and it'll show google successfully.  Then I tried putting in hard coded DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf, 8.8.8.8 for google, but no success there.  Even tried to hard code domains in /etc/hosts but sill only ping is successful.

     

    We need answers.  Or maybe we should just use chrome for the time being.  :-)
