Holy Cow!  I tried everything and was sweating because my iPad 2 is no longer under warranty and didn't want to have to fork out a bunch of dough to get my iPad fixed.  I also tried all the things you mentioned.  At last resort I followed your advice, hard reset, power down, wait, power up.  Finally, the volume rocker actually resulted in activity on the screen.  The volume bar also showed up in the control dock where as previously it was MIA.  Lastly clicking on the rocker while in Settings>Sounds resulted in the volume slider moving up and down as normal.

I hope the sound and volume functionality is back permanently...will check back in if it isn't....for everybody who's reading this...I refuse to believe this is a hardware issue!  Stupid iOS7.  I'm guessing that when it updated to iOS7, it caused my iPad to think that it's docked somehow to speakers.  You might be able to correct by turning the iPad off, and/or hard reseting it.

Same issue for me - no sounds, no phone capability as I can't hear them and they can't hear me. Also Music scrolls non-stop randomly through songs (though I can't hear anything).

I've done a full wipe and reset 5 times so far, 4 times it sorted the problem. Today it didn't.

In our office we tried switching off wifi and bluetooth and plugging into power. This worked. Why I don;t know.

The phone keeps going before conference calls which I'm running - and we don't have desk phones!!! So this couldn't be more annoying.

I hope that everyone is reporting this to Apple as well as posting it here. Without direct feedback Apple will do nothing.

    Try:

Settings>Sounds>scroll down to Lock Sounds. Turn that OFF (white)

    see if that helps

I held down my home button and my lock button together for a few seconds and then the sounds came back - not sure how long it will last though.....

I am having the same issues and have tried all recommendations.  The hard reset worked for me but was short-lived.  Lasted about 5 minutes and back to the same issues with no sound. I reported it to Apple as well.

Does it help going to the Genius bar at Apple? Has anyone done this yet?

Ladies and gentlemen, finally, I think I have the resolution:

After trying all the previous ideas, I discovered that when I was connected to my wi-fi trying airplay, the "iphone" option wasn't offered, just dock station, apple-TV, and other airports that I have in my network...

Other situation like random playing music like 5 seconds after deploying from dock etc told me that the problem was in the dock connector at the button of the iphone.

So I turned it off, took a Johnson cotton swabs with alcohol little wet... I passed it several times into the iphone dock connector.... then another but dry... both start be something dark, dirty... so i waited until the iphone connector was dry and turned it on....

that occurred an hour ago... since that I´m hearing my music on my iphone speaker!!! good luck!!

    Pl advice if it worked!

    Appologies for my english!

dont worry, the airplay just helped to discover the problem, not necessary to solve the issue. Just try! cotton and alcohol!
