Q: Pages, I receive a message "document can't be downloaded". Try again later.

Most Pages documents on my iPad 2 have a down arrow for downloading.  When I try to download I get a message "document can't be downloaded. Try again later."  Later has come and gone.  I have ruled out Internet connectivity.  I was forced to go home to retrieve them from my iMac, via email transfer.  The fact they are accessible from icloud with my Mac but not my iOS device is troubling.  I have a very large number of documents and the prospect of having to email each to myself to assure their integrity concerns me. I even made a minor change and saved to iCloud from my mac.  The updated document also fails to download in the same manner.

If this has been occurring for some time it may well be that you have some corrupt documents stopping everything working. It may well be that you can identify and eliminate these documents, but I suspect it would be simpler and less time consuming to remove all your documents and start again.

    • Save as many documents as you can to your desktop from iCloud.com or from the iCloud document panel in the appropriate Applications.
    • Any documents that are only available on other devices may be able to be saved using my user tip.
    • Turn off document syncing on every device.
    • On your mobile devices make sure document syncing is turned off not only in the iCloud settings, but also in the settings for each app.
    • Check the apps on your mobile devices no longer have any documents in them. (Removing and reinstalling the iWorks apps on your devices may be useful)
    • On your computer go to system preferences > iCloud > manage and delete any documents you see in your iCloud storage.
    • Restart all devices.
    • Re-enable document syncing device by device, ensuring that syncing is working properly before re-enabling syncing on the next device.

Found my own solution.  I connected to iTunes.  It did a sync.  I selected the iPad in the side panel and clicked on the Summary tab, I noticed my backup time was a few days ago so I did a manual backup.  After the backup I restarted Pages on my iPad 2 and the files now download.

Winston, thank you so much for the reply.  Since I have a Mac computer and Time Machine, the issue is less problematic. I could envision this being a nightmare for PC users. At least with iCloud a backup does exist.  It's just regaining access.  The online version of Pages is also another avenue I could have explored if I was on a PC.  Your willingness to be there to help, along with the others here, is what makes this work.  We owe you a debt of gratitude. Thank You.
