Q: Find my friends in ios6 worked even if the app was not "running", since upgrading to ios7, the uses has to actually "run" the app.  Why the change?

Until upgrading to IOS7, Find My Friends worked even if the app was not "opened".  Now it only works if the use specifically launches the app.  This is an issue with kids.  Prior to the upgrade, it worked like find my phone... essentially it was always "ON" even if it was not launched.  Please put it back the way it was so I and so many other parents can keep up with their children... main reason for keeping an iPhone for all 4 on my phone plan.

iPhone 5, iOS 7

    It did not.

If the app is not open, there is no code running so it cannot work.

How could you track your kids without openiong the app?

    Chris,

It must have worked like apple's find my phone and worked off of the location services.  It is not necessary for any app to run to locate a phone, it just needs to be connected to a cell or wifi area.  I am sure that is why "Find My Friends" was developed by Apple.  But in IOS6 that app did not have to be active...

    I must be missing something...

It must have worked like apple's find my phone and worked off of the location services.  It is not necessary for any app to run to locate a phone,

Then how did you locate the iPhone? Where was this location services info sent to?

FindMyiPhone needs to be running in order to use it.

Do you mean you running the app on the other phone?

FindMyFriends does not even need to be installed on your kids phone. They simply need to accept your invite.

    Chris,

To be clear, the "Find My Friends" app is installed on both phones.  When I open the app on my phone, prior to the second phone upgrading to ios7, as long as that (the second phone) had the app installed (not running, just installed) and we had previously been connected (through an invite), I could "see" the location of that phone.  Once the second phone upgraded to ios7, if the "Find My Friends" app was not "active" the location from my phone indicates that the 2nd phone is "location unavailable"
