ok... so having spent two days pulling my hair out and finally posting on here, as a last ditch effort we downloaded the .exe file onto a different computer (with windows 7) and then saved the file onto a flash drive... exactly the same file as can be downloaded from the apple site that the computer with windows 8 on said could not be installed or had commpatibility issues...
plugged the flash drive into the new sony with windows 8, opened window to view files, dbl clicked the itunes .exe file and hooblumminrah it has worked!
Answered my own question in the end but maybe this might help others in future... no idea why the download wouldnt work - i tried several versions of itunes from various places, clearing the download file each time one failed in order to start with a clean slate each time... there must be some underlying problems there that still might cause issues with future downloads but for now i couldnt care less...
not overly struck on this windows 8 malarky... i'm now off to see if itunes functions properly. watch this space....

Unfortunately this doesn't work for me..I have tried dowloading and installing the 64bit version (32bit is incompatible with the Vaio Windows 8) and I get the same pop-up screen telling me that "this app can't run on my pc and to contact the software publisher".. I have tried downloading and installing a fair number of times, also disabling McAfee Firewall but none of it works.. I am absolutely fed up.. can anyone help? Thanks!!!
