Q: convert imovie 6.0.3 files to Lion machine

I have iMovies (6.0.3) on 10.4 machine and need to play and edit them on a MacBook (10.7.5)  with iMovie 9.0.9.  Can this be done?

No, but you can run iMovie 6 with Lion as well as retaining your iMovie 9:

Happily this is easily achieved, but it has to be done backwards.

Delete iMovie 11 (just drag it to the trash). Now install iMovie 6 from the iLife 6 install disks. Update it to iMovie 6.0.3.

Now re-install iMovie 11. This automatically moves iMovie 6 into a folder it creates in your Applications folder called iMovie Previous Version.

    Then reinstall iMovie 11.

iMovie 6 works great with iDVD 7.

Now you have them both, and you can have both in the Dock as well.

    Very good!

That should solve immediate problem.  Can I just continue using iMovie 6 on Lion and ignore iMovie 9.0.9 because I am used to that app?  If so, what happens when I get a 10.8 or 10.9 or beyond machine and the current MacBook 10.7 and the G4 machines drop dead.

BTW your cat has a relative in California.  Yellow cats are the nicest!

    Thanks

iMovie 6 is known to work with Mountain Lion. Nobody knows yet if it will work with Mavericks! Yes, you can ignore iMovie 9 - I do!

Anything is possible, but yellow?? Mine is Ginger!

Bad news.  I trashed iMovie 9 and went to install iMovie 6 from iLife 06 disk and got message that PowerPC programs no longer supported.  How do I get iMovie 9 back again.

I guess our cat is ginger too!

Alternatively you could try this method, suggested by poster Uitech:

Open a terminal and type "touch /Library/Preferences/com.apple.iLife011.plist"

    (No quotes)

Install iMovieHD6 from the iLife 6 install disk.

This works with both Leopard and Snow Leopard Macs.

I have not done "terminals" in years.  They scare me.  Could you give specific sequence to open , put in disk, type command and getting out of terminal before I wreck something?

    Thanks for your patience.

Klaus 1,  LF54 said in his first post that he's running 10.7 Lion which does not support Power PC applications.

I am aware of that and I am able to read. iMovie 6 works with any version of OS X from Tiger upwards, including Mountain Lion as it is a universal application. If it wasn't it would not work with all versions of OS X from Tiger up to and including Mountain Lion.

Its OK but let's just stay focused on getting the idiot in California in and out of terminal without a disaster so he has some version of iMovie on the Lion machine (6.0.3 would be fine).  My daughter lives in the UK so I am aware that bed-time is approaching over there.

    Thanks to all

I can guarantee that I am older than your daughter and I am not going to bed quite yet!

When, and for what Mac, did you get the iLife 6 install disk?

Did you set install to only iMovie 6?

When I clicked the initial tan package (iLife 06) I got this message...

"You can't open the app iLife 06 because PowerPC apps are no longer supported

    OK"

The iLife disk was purchased in 2006 for my big box G4 machine which has iMovie HD 6.03 and iPhoto 6.0.6.

I also have a powerbook G4 with OS 10.4.11 and it has iMovie 5.0.2 and iPhoto 6.0.6.  It seems that I never upgraded iLife on the PB G4 because I was using it for navigation on a boat and did not need iMovie aboard.

Apple seem ready to sell me another upgrade for the G4 PB and I may do it if we get this unraveled.  I use the newer 10.7 MacBook for navigation now.  When I open and older iMovie 5.0.2 file on the big G4 machine it irreversibly ups the file to 6.0.3

Sorry for the slow reply but I have been testing the various upgrades of an older iMovie file. Both G4 machine do the upgrade and read old and new files but they do not work on the Lion MacBook which no longer has any version of iMovie.  Can I get iMovie 9.0.9 back on the machine?

With iLife dsks I never got a choice of what to install.

    Perhaps too much info!

    Thanks again

    Lou

I wonder if the installer iteself is a PPC app; I am running iMovie 6.0.4 which was a special download Apple made available to unhappy purchasers of iMovie 08. It is a .dmg and will only run/install if I have installed iMovie 08. iMovie 08 does install but does not work (which does not concern me since all I want is the 6.0.4 version). 6.0.4  does work in Lion and Mountain Lion, even alongside the latest iMovie version. This is my order of installing: iLife 08, iMovie 6.0.4 from .dmg, lLife 09, and finally iLife 11 - that results in two iMovie folders in the Applications folder: iMovie and iMovie (previous version).

So, again, the installer may have something to do with it; if you have access to a machine running Snow Leopard, I'd suggest installing it there and then try to simply copy the app to the Lion Applications folder (just to be sure, you may want to create a folder there with "iMovie (previous version)").

    Good morning Klaus 1

I apologize that this is off topic here but wanted to get you this info. On seach "iMovie HD and Lion" I found solution.

I copied iMovie HD app in the G4 machine app folder and put it directly into the app folder on the Lion MacBook. I can now open the old iMovie HD projects on the Lion MacBook.

I am not sure if I should reload iMovie 9.0.9 on the new machine.

Can you put this info into the proper catagory since it is such a simple solution.

    Thanks for your assistance.

I sent the above to Klaus 1 and I think babowa was the author of this solution. Thank-you.

I am now using iMovie HD 6.0.3 on the Lion machine and it works well.  I have not tried to open an old file with iMovie 9.0.9.  I am ok until this machine goes vintage or dies but for the time being I can work on old projects with the new machine.  I still have no clue as to wether these projects will convert to the newer iMovie version.

Does anyone know if I can re-download iMovie 9.0.9 on to the Lion machine.  I already paid $14.95 for the original purchase?

My latest version of iMovie did not come from the app store, but, if you put your old version into a folder labeled "previous version", then you should be able to download/install your new one from the app store. If it balks, try it the other way around: install the new one first, then create a separate folder and put the old version in it. Restart and test.

And yes, your older projects should work in the new version.
