Q: MacBook Pro 2011 17" hard freeze

Overheat? The fans revved and suddenly I could use nothing but the cursor. Had to hold down the power switch to kill all and then re-power & startup. I wasn't doing anything unusual, but I had 7 apps open and was amid an auto-backup to TimeMachine.

Just a little disillusioned and concerned, wondering if anyone else there has experienced a hard freeze like this.

Which ones, how did you identify them (so others may)

You need to find out what the specs are on your Macbook.

In terms of GPU, there are several ways to do this.  I think you can check your original receipt (or order confirmation) or you can check the Apple logo at the top left of your OS, click "About this Mac", click "More Info", go to "Graphics/Display" and look under "Chipset Model"

    Early 2011s use either

Intel HD Graphics 3000  Radeon HD 6490M or Intel HD Graphics 3000 Radeon HD 6750

    whereas late 2011s

Intel HD Graphics 3000 Radeon HD 6750M or Intel HD Graphics 3000  Radeon HD 6770M

It definitely affects late 2011 models. Read about mine here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/22764438?ac_cid=tw123456

Thanks walkietokyo... so essentially any way I go with this the chances of it coming back are quite significant...

I think I'll be forcing the integrated chip (and running single screen!!) until it fails completely... from which time it can sit in a dark ignored corner until I can get to an AASP. Need to sort out a replacement pc in the interim though.

I asked about your statement that the logic boards are identical

    Airbum88 wrote:

And then you tell me about the GPU

Can you answer the question as asked please.

You didn't ask me about logic boards.  You just reposted my quote.  And, if you want to find out, you are always welcome to google it yourself.

For a person that's asking others for information, you should really watch your tone.

    You said:

    I asked which ones

Now you can't answer the question?

Exactly as I expected, you made it up.

Wow, you really don't know English do you?  I said "logic board and gpu".  How am I supposed to know which one you were referring to.

And I did not make it up.  As I already said, it depends on the specs.  Some people have 2.0 GHz logic boards, 2.2 GHz, 2.4 GHz.  That's something you have to check yourself.

Given how many points you have on these forums, you are probably just Apple fanboy.  If these logic board issues do not concern you, I suggest you stop posting here.

I'll ignore your suggestion, but thanks for your concern.

By the way, check the logic board part numbers if you wish to know which are the same part.

I’ve been having the same problem with my early 2011 macbook pro and I just got back from apple store, unfortunately not happy, as it’s been a issue with so many people and it’s seems like the GPU won’t work for some reason, i’m just ****** off because next month my Vaio will complete 5 years, and I had no problem other than have to reinstall the windows few times, it’s disappointing  that my macbook pro didn’t even last 2 years and apple it’s not doing anything about this common issue

I've been genuinely curious about how similar the logic boards are between models - since Apple's boards are pre-soldered with the CPU and GPU, their part numbers seem to be pretty specific to each model's unique specs.  But I've wondered if the underlying logic board (e.g. the base board that the GPU and CPU are soldered onto) is common among, say, all 15" Unibody MacBook Pros of a certain generation.  I'm not sure I could find that out unless I had multiple boards to compare or inside information.

On a related note - when I was speaking to one of the Genius Bar employees about the very similar experiences people had with the 2011 iMac models that were recently covered under a repair program, he insisted that the problems couldn't be related because the logic boards were nothing alike (in fact, those iMac GPUs are on a separate board from the rest of the logic board).  But the graphics cards themselves appear to be similar from my understanding of the AMD Radeon HD 6000 series (which includes our 2011 15" and 17" MBPs as well as the affected iMacs) - so if the problem is with the GPU itself, there could be commonality between the iMac and MBP issues.

Part of the reason that I want to see an official fix for these issues is simply the desire to understand what's going wrong with our computers - it's really an intriguing puzzle.

ai, excatly the same problem as me .................

I think it is hard to wait for the call-back, since the problem appeared in the period of out of 1 year warranty, who did not by the applecare. For the guy buy applecare, apple just replace the motherboard with a modified version.

So I think most of us here forgot to buy the applecare....

just landed on my desktop after 3.5 hours of reboots (letting the mbp cooling after each reboot because it's getting very very warm... and testing pram resets / smc resets / safe mode boot etc). It's getting worse each day.

Hey Guys! is there any news from Apple to recall all MBP with VGA issue such as ati radeon 6750, many owners has thesame isues, freezing, blue vertical screen, unable to startup even in safemode.

In jeddah, they are asking me for 900$ for logic board replacement, my MBP 2011 15" is only 2 yrs old and im suffering for this issues.

    Really dissapointed with this product!

i hope there will be a recall same as the MBP 2010 with NVidia GPU.

need your kind concern for any news..
