Q: iOS 7 usb internet tethering is not working?

Before updating to iOS 7 - I would tether my iphone to my laptop using a usb cable (no wifi hotspot or bluetooth).

Now that I have updated I can only use wifi hotspot or bluetooth - connecting to my laptop with via a cable is not tethering my device.

What can I do to fix this?

iPhone 5, iOS 7

    Please note:

I have never had itunes open to be able to do the USB-tethering.

Since iphone 3s i have just connected the iphone via USB and tethering worked ok.

I got the iphone 5 just after launch, and i have used this for USB tethering daily w/o the need for opening itunes.

So, we need this to get working again.

    Apple ? Do something !

Yeah Staxrod... You read my mind!

It MUST work by just connecting the USB cable as it had been always! (It is also written so on hotspot screen on iOS7). And for your notes: hotspot connection by bluetooth is not still working (although I will prefer the USB connection).

Now, days are passing, life is short. APPLE: YOU MUST FIX THIS NOW

    OR

YOU MUST OPEN THE WAY FOR US TO TURN BACK TO iOS6 BECAUSE YOU TURNED "THE PHONE" INTO A PIECE OF CRAB, NOW, BY YOUR "WORLD'S MOST ADVANCED OPERATING SYSTEM" !...

So, Apple: Are you still thinking that you can handle this simple job? Or somebody should call Steve Job's soul for you to get help? So, the real question in my mind: "Is Apple really dead?"

I had the same problem and solved it following the instructions suggested by

    robertfromsyd  here:

I hope it helps you as well.

    http://blog.iphoting.com/blog/2012/09/04/fixing-broken-iphone-usb-tethering-on-o s-x/

I did the check explained in this site. I have this output from the terminal:

/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext/Contents/MacOS/AppleUSBEthe rnetHost: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures

    /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext/Contents/MacOS/AppleUSBEthe rnetHost (for architecture i386):          Mach-O object i386

    /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext/Contents/MacOS/AppleUSBEthe rnetHost (for architecture x86_64):          Mach-O 64-bit kext bundle x86_64

So, according to the article above, what Milly70 is refering to is not the problem I am experiencing.

I don't wanna go further as the article suggests.

Life is still short. And Apple is much more rotten as they do not fix this.

Hi, try this (restart your Mac after the procedure):

This solved my question by robertfromsyd  on Sep 20, 2013 7:07 PM

    robertfromsyd

The fix is to download "Kext Utility" (for ML http://cvad-mac.narod.ru/index/0-4

for SL Lion and other cats do a search, I used SL one.......

and run it, and drag and drop an OLD working "AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" file... (http://www.mediafire.com/download/44rgtt5k6ot0t72/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext.zip)

and it does its thing for a few minutes and fixes it.....

but you might want to shop around for the right AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext file that works if the above one doesnt...

I used 10.7 itunes one and it worked with itunes 11.1 and now I have USB tethering back as new....

Yep. It did the job. With one difference: First I used the "AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" file provided on the link. Restarted. Nothing! Then, I went back in Time Machine and restored a file from a date that I remember USB tethering was working. I dragged it to desktop. Then, I dragged the file on desktop to the Kext Utility. After it finished working, retarted. Disabled wireless on the phone, turned the Wi-Fi on the computer off. Now, writing this post by hotspot connetion.

    Thank you.

Now I will check if my iPhone will be listed on some softwares as an alternative connection option to the computer's Wi-Fi. What I want to do is to connect the virtual machine in parallels desktop application to internet by bridged network via iPhone, and connect the computer via wi-fi via the universities wireless service. If it happens, then I've got my phone functioning before the iOS7 upgrade (because, it was the exact way of its functioning before the update!). If not, I will post here and continue my protest on Apple!

Worked for me, too! I restored a backup of that file from before 11.1 came out (< September 18, 2013). Specific steps I did:

    1. Finder/Go to Folder:/System/Library/Extensions

    2. Enter Time Machine

    3. Go to date < Sep 18

    4. Restore file AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext

    5. Confirm in Finder that you want to "Replace existing"

It worked! No reboot required. iTunes was NOT running.

    MBP 10.7.5

This means I would be screwed in case of any emergency????

Even no way to go back to iOS 6.x??

So its my last iPhone.. next upgrade will be an android for sure... atleast they don't take out basic features...

    Steady now, relax !

This is clearly a failure in itunes, anyhow a failure.

USB tethering works on mountain lion, so this is not a removal of feature, but a failure.

This has nothing to do with iphone or android. But feel free to go to andoid and endure all the other failures and mis-concepts.

Thanks for that info.  I can't even find the System/Library file anywhere in my Folder.

    I used Searchlight and nothing.

How do I find the thing so I can trash it??

See my earlier reply. That folder is normally hidden, but you can get there using Finder Go menu.

Update: After installing iTunes 11.1.1, it broke again. Recommend storing a copy of the earlier/working AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext somewhere where you can easily copy it over on each iTunes update, until Apple actually fixes this.

troubador, same problem here - it's the phone, the Mac and iPad can no longer do Bluetooth tethering.

Store agreed we'd done everying except buy a phone.  We tried it with an iPhone4 with iOS6 and everything worked just fine, as it had before I upgraded.

Now, becuase iOS 7 upgrades are not reversible, I'm stuck stuck.

    Any ideas?

Apple?  A Bug you guys can fix?

just do what Milly70 suggests. it works.

furthermore, if you have a time machine backup,

1- on finder, cmd+shift+G, then type exactly /System/Library/Extensions

2- enter time machine, go to a date before you updated your itunes (probably you updated your itunes at the same day with your ios, but otherwise, you have to remember the update date for itunes),

3- find AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext file and restrore it.

4- download Kext Utility from the link Milly70 provides a few posts above.

    5- run Kext Utility.

6- drag the AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext file into the Kext Utility. It will do the rest of the job.

when Kext Utility finishes, you should be ready to use USB tethering. not sure if you need to restart, but it is not a big deal to do if so.

note: i am using lion. haven't tried it on mountain lion or mavericks. but the key is to use Kext Utility since it arranges some of the settings for the file for the system to identify and use it. otherwise, system alerts an error, sayin, AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext file was not installed properly.
