Q: iCloud downgrade

Why after years of being a Mac and icloud user do I suddenly have my emails lost, refusing to send because I haven't bought extra storage which was originally given for free for being a good customer?

Apple has been warning us for two years that our extra iCloud storage was only valid for two years and that we'd have to purchase extra at the end of that time if we went over the basic limit. The extra storage was, I believe, given to everyone who had an iCloud account.
