An error message always occurs.
And what does the error message say exactly?
Sometimes the upload will not succeed, if your book contains photos that are corrupted . Is the preview of the book ok? If you not yet have made a preview, check it carefully, if all photos seem to be o.k.
See: iPhoto, Aperture: Previewing an order in iPhoto or Aperture

Oct 1, 2013 9:36 AM in response to annette256by Old Toad,Boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and follow leonie's suggestion for previewing the book.
If you can successfully create a pdf preview and there are not errors, i.e. typos, missing text, etc., then try ordering your book from the Safe Mode.
Save the pdf file to compare with the printed copy when it arrives.

Oct 1, 2013 9:54 AM in response to Old Toadby léonie,But annette256 already tried Safe Mode, Old Toad?
I have done a repair in iphoto, rebuilt it, uploaded in safe mode and have even started again and made another book only to have the error message appear again saying that uploading was not successful.
If the preview is o.k., I'd have suggested to try from a different administrator user account, in combination with Safe Boot Mode. Perhaps it is a preferences or permissions problem.

Oct 1, 2013 9:59 AM in response to léonieby Old Toad,Missed it since it wasn't capitalized. Been missing a lot of those lately. The eyes must be going.
If all else fails a reinstall of the system may be indicated via the Recovery volume: OS X: About OS X Recovery
Thanks for the catch, leonie.

Oct 1, 2013 7:05 PM in response to léonieby annette256,Hi LeonieDF,
The version of iphoto is iphoto 11, 9.4.3
The error message occurs at the end of the upload process. It states :
"An error occured uploading your order. Click retry to upload the failed asset again or cancel".
We have also created a pdf and checked it - all seems ok with the images and text there.
Still at a loss...
Hi OldToad,
We've also tried booting in safe mode, checked the pdf built while loaded in safe mode, amd tried to upload again multiple times with no success.
Have rebuilt, repaired the iphoto 11 data base as well. Still no luck...
The strange thing is, the photos used to make this book have been all used to make previous books succesfully with no such problems.
I have also re made the book from scratch 3 times now too...
We will now try creating and using a different admin account.
Cheers all, thanks for your assistance and I'll keep you posted.
Regards,
Annette256
