Not sure how much this will help, but here's my experience with this.

Same symptoms as others: after the display turns off and I wake it, within 5 - 60 seconds the computer goes all the way to sleep. Takes a loooong time to sleep if Chrome is running. Pretty quick if it's not.

Took MBA into genius bar for repair. Even after trying some quick software repairs (deleted a sleep image or something) and nearly sending me on my way because it was "fixed", the problem still happened. Genius was able to reproduce the black screen/sleep issue. Apple Store kept the MBA for a week running diagnostics trying to find what was making it go to sleep. They weren't able to pinpoint it, so asked me if they could delete all my data and reinstall the base OS. After this, they reported that they simulated thousands of sleep/wake cycles and could no longer reproduce the issue.

I restored everything from Time Machine and of course the problem came right back. I didn't test long before the restore, so I can't be sure it was fixed with certainty before the restore, but I'm guessing it was.

I'd love to identify the software/settings that cause this (if it truly isn't hardware). It would be great to have a big database of hardware/software inventory for everyone reporting this issue and identify those things that are common to all. Because I'm lazy, I'll just post some info from mine (the stuff that I don't assume every MBA has). Maybe others will see it and make some correlations.

From what I've read, it seems that Chrome could be involved as well as WiFi.

Hardware: 2013 MBA 13" with the 1.7 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB memory and 250 GB storage.

    Software:

         Chrome

         Office 2011

         Evernote

         Sophos Antivirus

         Tivoli Endpoint Manager

         Cisco Anyconnect VPN client

         Audiobook Builder

         Firefox

         Microsoft Lync

         Wunderlist

Yeah it seems Chrome might be making the issue come out. I've been having different blackouts (no wake from sleep, black screen until hard reboot). Since I've disabled powering down SSD during sleep, I haven't had any problems yet for the last few days.

I also wonder, do you have the Chrome thumbnails weird colors issue? http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1613841 Because I do

I've been working this one today. Progress so far:

    Condition1:

    13" MBA 10.8.4

    1) press power button to pull up shutdown menu.

    2) click sleep

      3) BLACKOUT.

    4) Recover with many clicks, not actually clear which did it.

    5) yes - chrome was on. reading this thread of course.

    Changes: Upgrade to 10.8.5

    Condition2:

    Same Machine: 10.8.5

      1) press power button to pull up shutdown menu.

    2) click sleep

      3) normal speedy sleep.

    4) recover with space bar, just like old times.

    5) yes - chrome was on. writing this post of course

one small step for mac, one giant leap for mackind.

I'm running 13" MBA 10.8.5 and still having screen shut off problem. Also running chrome, but will try switching to firefox for a bit to try to isolate the problem.

I still can believe that removing/replacing Chrome is offered as a fix for this problem. I have MBA 13 2011 and MBA 13 2012 also MBP 13 2010 ALL HAVE CHROME - none is having blackout issue. Had 2 MBA 11 2013 both had black screen issue - waiting for 3rd replacement and hope it will not cause troubles.

I wonder if Haswell iMac cannot run Chrome.. Guys its nonsense..

Yes I think it's related to Chrome. My wife's MBA 2013 is now not experiencing blackout anymore since Chrome's last or recent (or maybe this week's) updates. The only freeze is only when accessing and saving PSD stored in Airdisk (attached to Airport Extreme). <-- which is "normal" since all 10.8.5 Mac in our office is freezing modifiying files in Airdisk too.

    Pretty weird for Chrome.

I just got my new Macbook Air yesterday and was trying it out by watching a movie on Netflix.  This was after I migrated everything from my other computer via ethernet.  I kept getting an error message from Netflix which prevented me from playing any movies.  I followed their help procedures and one of them was to reinstall silverlight  which I did.  I started watching a movie and all of a sudden my screen went black and there was a clicking noise coming from my speaker.  The only thing I could do was shut down using my power button.   When I powered up everything booted up fine so I tried to run another movie on Netflix I got a message that my silverlight was corrupt so I had to reinstall it again.  Everything ran fine after that so far.  I did run an AHT and it came out fine.  I am using Chrome.  I will return if I continue to have this issue.

The 10.8.5 update fixed the black screen/sleep issue that I was experiencing. I find it odd that it hasn't resolved the problem for some of you, although it sounds as if many of you are discussing problems different from what I experienced.

My camera no longer works with Skype after the 10.8.5 update, as is outlined in this bug: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5216 .

Another update came down the pipe today, but it did not resolve the camera issue. You would think that a company that controls all of the hardware would be able to prevent these bugs from making it to end users.

    Yay quality control!

I can confirm that the bug is not fixed in 10.8.5.

I have Chrome installed but I haven't been using it. When the screen blackouts happen Chrome isn't running at all, so not sure what it is triggering on mine. This is an intermittent thing which happens even as I am using the machine. When it happens the screen is black and light from an outside source behind the MBA does not illuminate the Apple logo as normal when the screen is dimmed or display resting. I am unable to wake the machine for a good 5 minutes when this incident happens. Happens to me a couple of times a day.

I'm on a mid 2013 MBA 13" with 256 HD that I just bought at 10 days ago. Black outs happened after upgrade to 10.8.5. Just adding my experience here to help with the troubleshooting.

I 'm running 13' Macbook air. I still face the blackout issue even when I am not using chrome installed on my machine. Can't think of anything else to isolate this issue. Not sure if Apple is any serious resolving this issue. When I contacted Apple, they told they could take my machine and run some diagnostic tests but couldnt gurantee to resolve the issue. They hinted me to wait for Mavericks.

Got an Air 2013 13" i7+256G ssd+8G ram and keep getting the black screen issue. Went to Genius Bar lots of times and they were unable to reproduce the problem with their 2-day benchmark test. They just replaced the Topcase and logic board for me and reinstalled the OS but after 7 hours of usage it blacked out again. I immediately sent it back to them and they said they would discuss what to do with it. It's been repaired three times they will probably replace it for me.

I use chrome but I'm not sure if it was running every time the issue took place. I was typing in Chrome when the screen blacked out last time though. The issue occured in both 10.8.4 and 10.8.5.

MBA11" i5 8GB 256 - my third replacement - second day probably under 10h usage and just had first blackout. Chrome was NOT on however another 20+ apps open.

    Screen Shot 2013-10-05 at 19.44.55.png

Initialy went to that blacklit screen with cursor only after a minute+ went sleep.

I was changing from Codebox to Thunderbird via Mission control when it happened - 10.8.5 Supplemental

I could not wake it up so left for 1-2 min and pressing keyboard and clicking touchpad woke up.

I've got the same problem as alot of others here i think, even if there is like 3 issues discussing in the same thread?

Screen goes 'grey-ish' - with mouse cursor working AS USUAL then wakes up after 10-20 sec with just a keyboard click.

I've removed chrome and will try using Safari for a couple of days (both on battery and adapter) and i will come back if it's the solution for this strange issue.

24 hour WITHOUT google chrome and the screen-issue haven't happened once

conclusion, google chrome IS the problem?
