Q: iPhone 5 with iOS 7 randomly shuts off

Are any of you aware of iOS 7 randomly shutting down iPhones? Ever since I upgraded 2 day ago it has shut down at least 3 times. The battery was at about 18%, 20%, and 36% when it shut down.  I don't believe it’s a bug with the battery percentage because it started back up as soon as hit the power button.  Also, it is not due to overheating or anything else wrong with the environment.  Nothing in the environment has changed except that I updated to iOS 7.  Let me know if this occurs to anyone else and if there are any solutions pending?

Sorry to say that turning off the automatic downloads did not completely solve the problem. My phone just shut down, unfortunately. We may just have to wait until the next ios update to solve this problem.

Just updating to say that my devices have been shut down free for over 3 days now. So I'm keeping the BOLD text set to OFF until there is a fix

I too have an iPhone 5 I bought in February. Since updated to the new iOS7 the phone now ranodomly restarts. It seems to happen just as I unlock the phone or close an app. The phone screen turns white and the apple icon appears. Hopefully there is a fix soon, as well as a fix for the iMessage issue. My phone randomly decides not to send iMessages or default back to SMS messaging.

I'm telling you guys you need to turn off background app refresh. What background app refresh tries to do is study your usage trends. So when you pick up your phone to use it, it is predicting so many apps to refresh and that's why it probably crashes. Try it out my phone has not crashed since yesterday. And I am not talking about the automatic updates setting

I have the iPhone 5, this has been happening randomly to me.  When it happens most frequently is when my phone is low on battery, I'll get a 20% warning and then it will shut off.   Even if I get it to tun back on it will shut off again until I plug it into the charger, and once plugged it, like many have gated my phone will say 30%.

I'm skeptical of these proposed fixes, as my phone went about a week without having he issue, with absolutely no changes in settings.

Side note, I have never had the bold text turned on, so I'm absolutely certain that is not a fix!

I too have had the random shut off problem. I have a 5s, upgraded to iOS 7.02. It happens every 2-4 days; not frequent enough to be a complete bother. But I'm getting worried since it keeps happening. My phone will randomly turn off, black screen apple logo. I have to wait for the phone to turn back on on its own.

I do not have bold text feature on. I do not have the background refresh on. I do not have automatic downloads of updates turned on. It always happens when I have at least 20% battery or more.

I am adding in my story to encourage Apple to look into this. Also so I can follow this thread. Here's hoping we hear something soon.

So like I've posted in this thread already, this has been happening a LOT on my 5S. Turned off background apps, etc. Everything suggested in this thread. Nothing worked. HOWEVER I turned off the fingerprint ID and my phone hasn't crashed since. If you have a 5S and are experiencing the random shutdown problerm I believe this could be a fix. Try it and let us know.

COME ON APPLE UPDATE ALREADY. I like the fingerprint feature and want to USE it.

Same problem here guys. It happens when I'm usually connected to my car stereo. I don't have background refresh on nor bold enabled. This iOS was installed fresh at the apple store and it's a new replacement. It's definitely a software problem. APPLE - PLEASE FIX!

If it helps, my iphone 5 was down to 30% I turned off the reduce motion setting and as soon as I went back to the home screen the phone shut off! it's wouldn't restart until I put it on charge! when it restarted it showed 35% charged!

I have now turned reduce motion to on and so far it seems fine again

I have a iPhone 5 and the latest update to 7.0.2. Phone still shuts off randomly even with a full charge. Makes no sense. The only way I can get it to turn on is by holding the power and home button down for about ten seconds.

    Apple please fix this issue.

Mine too is having the same problem! Just randomly shuts off. Goes on the sleep screen then when pressing main button to turn back on it just starts to reboot. No reason why.

Same here, iPhone5 with iOs7.02.  Has been a problem since the beginning. Have another (but black) iPhone 5 with iOs7 (same backup) only the black one has not the same problem. So its randomly (on iPhones) and has nothing to do with settings on or off.

I'm also having the same problem.  Now is getting really anoying because it is happening several times a day and my phones stays blocked for a while.  The most annoying part is that now I never know if my phone is working or not, so I might be missing important calls because of this technical issue.

I'm usually able to get it to work again by holding down the home and power button for a while (it works most of the times).

    Is Apple looking into this?
