Q: keynote icloud corrupting files

Can anyone help with the following.

I created a presentation in keynote - and usually I have this on the mac alone - but this time used iCloud excusively. Presentation was looking good on the mac and on the iPad, but wanting to also see what it looked like on the new iCloud Beta, I opened this from my windows PC using IE. It gave me a few compatibility warnings - and didnt look so nice on the PC, so I shut it down without changing anything.

Today I went to open it from the Mac - and the file wont open - all is totally corrupted. I have lost it in iCloud, lost it on the iPad and don't have a local backup on the computer (silly me - but that's what iCloud is for right??).

Does anyone know how I can recover the file?? There was a lot of work there and time too short to re-do.

Thanks

Andrew

Have you tried File > Revert To > Browse All Versions.

Unfortunately the file seems to have been corrupted such that it is not possible to open (I get an error message that the file was not created with keynote - which is just crazy) or revert to previous versions. Not only that, but even the sychronized copy on the hard drive (mobile documents) is corrupted. In this occasion, cloud synchronizing really replaced a good file with nothing, just because I opened in iCloud keynote beta on the PC.

The only thing that would save me right now would be a time machine backup - but I didn't run one of those between finishing the presentation and opening it in the windows browser.

Wasn't expecting this, so didnt have a local hard copy - will now revert to creating the file locally and copying up to iCloud once done as I would normally have done. Pain in the .... though. will take at least a day to replace/repeat the file.

General warning to others to be aware that this behaviour is possible.

You shouldn't need to run a time machine back up, they should occur automatically every hour.

Only if the disk is plugged in - or on the same wireless network. Unfortunately mine is at home and I was doing this at work (hence the need to test on a PC).

    OK, got ya.

Whilst it won't help you recover documents that have already become corrupt, can I suggest you get into the habit of backing up your documents in the cloud regularly.

Thats a good tip. In this instance I created the file in iCloud directly from the MacBook and when it was finished tired to open in the beta Keynote on iCloud to see what it looks like. That was the first mistake, and once it seemed to get corrupted, I could no longer open with the MacBook, or the iPad (which gave me an error message that the file needed to be created with iWork 09 - which it was before opening with iCloud). Unfortunately the sync meant it was corrupted back on the hardrive too.

Once I'm done on the Mac though - I'll move it over to iCloud (a copy) and do the backup etc. Then I'll see if this is reproducible and alert Apple if so.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I think they may just point out that iWork at iCloud.com is a beta product.

Yea. Anyway - tried to reproduce the error - cant, so don't know what happened. Now I have several copies of the files at least - should be OK.

Keynote for Mac and iOS is not a beta however.  I've had a file corrupted simply by trying to open a Keynote file on my ipad that was saved in iCloud.  I never touched it in the icloud.com iWork suite.

This is a flaw that is simply unacceptable.  This is very frustrating that people are putting hours of effort into a presentation only to find their files corrupted.  We were promised our files everywhere...it seems they are everywhere, but corrupted & unusable.
