It's true that young people represent a very different type of consumer in the way that they approach music. But I have to disagree that they take a less visual approach. Any evidence of that is anecdotal. One could argue that they are more visual, being brought up in an age where everything has a screen (LP players, 8-track and cassette players did not). I work in IT and have several close relatives in prominent positions in the music industry. None of us buy that 'nobody was using CoverFlow'.

My best guess is still that CF wasn't "flat". In that case, Apple was very strategic in removing it before IOS7 came out. They circumvented criticism for IOS7 by disassociating the two.

But we users, both young and not-so-young, are still left with a product that is, by far, inferior.

Music is entertainment. The visual portion of it is (arguably) beautiful, important and part of the user experience. I don't mind change, but Apple really needs to replace CoverFlow with something...

    Right on Mark...

I was thinking about music as a composition, as you said better than I, "a cohesive artistic statement"... That goes back to the time of Beethoven's symphonies, huh? Or operas... that artists may have a lot more to say than what can be delivered in a 99 cent download... But, of course, we don't always listen for an artistic statement, sometimes we want the day to go by a little more enjoyably. Which then circles back to AM car radios and singles, and top 40 all. And Kayne West does appear to have something to say, now if I could just understand what it was, LOL... and my kids will occasionally listen to whole albums, usually from the fringe and alternative landscaps, whether it be indie, alt country, whatever... Pop music, with a few notable exceptios of course (Beatles come to mind), really never had a complex artistic statement make, and that's fine!

Maybe I am just afraid, not just that I lose coverflow?

So Apple is going their way. In some ways they go without me. That's OK, I must be "aging out", LOL.

I agree that the kids enjoy the visuals as much as the old timers. Fans like to see how artists represent themselves through album artwork campaigns.

As for the flat look theory though, it doesn't hold up as long as Cover Flow lives on in the Finder. Is it still there in the developer's version of Mavericks?

Yes, it was in the developer's release over the summer. As to whether it will be there in the final, I don't know. Certainly many third-party developers use it. My favorite program for scanning documents and keeping a database of receipts, Paperless, has a Cover Flow view, which I use exclusively. I assume that Apple will keep that view option open to developers.

    Excellent, well said!

I think maybe Roger Waters sentiments taken out of context might sum this up in a different way:

The bleeding hearts and the artists

    Make their stand.

And when they've given you their all

Some stagger and fall, after all it's not easy

Banging your heart against some mad bugger's wall.

Except that OS X isn't flat (yet) and iTunes losing its depth on the desktop has nothing whatsoever to do with the UI experience on iDevices. This is entirely a desktop issue, as whether or not the music player on iDevices has CoverFlow or not is separate from iTunes the application in discussion here.

I still cannot come up with any reasonable justifications for removing CoverFlow from iTunes when it currently exists throughout the rest of the operating system.

Yeah, this *****, Especially when I need to upgrade my wife's phone to a 5C.

The only way to backup the **** thing is to update iTunes to 11.

    Unbelievable.

Does anyone know if there's a way of duplicating the entire tunes library (without the media)

Then duplicating the iTunes app itself, and using the new one for the new phone, just to back it up and the old one for my music ?

Do-able ? Please tell me it is.

I don't think you can have two different versions of iTunes on one computer without setting up a dual boot thing. But you can certainly keep multiple iTunes Libraries on a single computer. I do. You can switch by opening iTunes with the Option key held down.

I also keep a backup hard drive with my main music system's iTunes folder, which normally runs from a Mac Mini running iTunes 10.7. If I open up that iTunes library on my laptop, which runs iTunes 11.1, it plays fine (and I can update my iPhone and iPad with it). When I move that backup drive back over to the Mac Mini, I overwrite the now-updated iTunes libraries with the older libraries so that it contains a clone of the 10.7 iTunes folder.

I had my computer stolen recently. I deliberately had kept itunes 10.7 on it because of the cover flow. My new computer has mountain lion pre installed and now I have itunes 11 with no cover flow. What a drag. It is such a useless tool when flicking through your albums looking for something to play. CoverFlow was such a visceral and intuitive experience, much like flicking through albums. Shame on you mac, you're on drugs again.
