I am searching these forums because my Airport Extreme also crashes. Firmware 7.6.1. I've seen other posts about this as well in this forum -- some that think it is related to attached USB drives perhaps consuming too much power. But I have no USB devices attached.
The airport just occasionally appears to crash. You don't see it via the Airport Utility, though the unit is powered on with a green light. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it works again. Until the next time, perhaps 10 minutes, or perhaps several days, it crashes again.
I have the same problem as fblom, and its driving me crazy. It started about 6 days ago on a wifi setup that was previously working just fine!? So I hope somebody will be able to explain whats happening. I am using OS X Lion and Airport Extreme, which was updated 2 days ago.

Okay, so what I did to solve this: I reset my airport extreme, throwing all the port forwards and reservations out. I put my settings back in and it works just fine... You can reset it by sticking something into the reset button on the extreme - something like a pen or pencil.

This happens with all the Apple airport products. They are extremely flakey. I have 2 time machines and 1 AirPort Extreme. They all do this.
The bargain basement units work better. Not buying Apple airports routers again.

I'm having this problem as well. I've had the Airport Extreme for years with no trouble. Extremely reliable with lots of heavy use. Never a hickup.
Last few weeks its rebooting every few hours. I can't tell what's causing it. I haven't changed configuration on it in a long time. I do have a USB hard drive attached, but it has its own power supply.
It currently is running version 7.6.4.
