How do I hide old podcasts in iTunes 11.1 and What's Up with the New Podcast Pane?

as to glitch I wouldn't put my hopes too high. Podcasts are a sub-section of the market which generates no profits other than hardware once in a while

I would bet a lot that Apple has told German Public Radio - one of my main sources for Podcasts - that:

"... hat sich bei iTunes mit der neuen Version nichts sicht- und spürbares verändert"

= at iTunes new Version nothing visible or feelable has changed.

As to date German media haven't picked up on it, they seem to spread only what Apple tells them, maybe they want to prevent their privately held stock from going down further. But without sarcasm there seems to be no investigative journalism re Apple going on, unless it is about maltreatment of their workers in China. As to their products they repeat what Apple tells them unchecked.

I hope apple fixes this, got to keep the customers happy, although it may be a marketing thing. Anybody know if its possible to use 'time machine' to revert to the old version after deleting the new funky version?? If so will it cause other problems? and What would be the procedure be to reinstall the previous version using  time machine?

to me it looks like it is all for the mobile synching crowd - no hint whatsoever that my unability to decide which podcast offerings I want to see on-screen has even been taken notice of.

seems to me like  it is the perfect Nanny-Scheme -

I make you buy my stuff and afterwards I behave like the Master of the Universe towards you

You may complain as much as you like I can't even be bothered to even acknowledge your discomfort and misery, after all I am big mighty fat Apple who has some glorious things on offer but when things go wrong I just shrug my shoulders and say "learn to live with it" aka who are you daring to disagree with me.

So it's either throw the Apple stuff away or behave like a good obedient little girl.

(if only one could be sure that the others are doing the things which matter most to me RELIABLY better or all in all were more reliable than Apple.

iTunes 11.1.1 is now available. When subscribing to podcasts there are some changes:

In list view only the most recent episode shows when you first subscribe. In 'My Podcasts' view the same is true: click 'Old episodes' to show earlier episodes, click 'Done' to hide them or 'Add all' to keep them there and add them to List view.

In List view each episode now has a blue circle to the left showing it can be played as a stream. Click the cloud icon at right to download it. Control-click and choose 'Delete' to delete any episode from the list.

There are also some Settings in 'My Podcasts' and 'My Stations' which allow you to change the arrangements for downloading and playing on a podcast by podcast basis (not episode).

Boy! Am I glad I subscribed to the email notification for this discussion!  I just received the email, clicked on the hypertext, saw your post, downloaded 11.1.1, and whew!  What a relief!  Still trying to figure out why it downloads stuff I've already listened to, but it is SO much better!

    Thanks, Roger.  Thanks iTunes/Apple.

thanks a lot - it looks like things are back to normal aka manageable/administratable

I hope they have kept the one good thing I discovered during these past days of misery with the new version i.e. that it has become a lot more comfortable to get to the link of a podcast - I forgot the exact procedure but it looked like iTunes provides now all as compared to previously very selective, so that one had to find it on the site of the initial provider.

and wonder upon wonder under "my podcasts" I get to where I should get to instead of always landing on Merkel.

a pity they haven't reverted to the old mode when the information window and the list were shown both as operable  i.e. one could keep the information window open while deleting unwanted podcasts without first having to click into the list picture to make it operable again.

Another feature they have dis-improved in an earlier version sadly stays dis-improved.

If I search in list for a podcast I get there OK, but when I delete the search word, list jumps back to A aka top. An old version would give me the whole list back but left me on the before searched for item. This was a very comfortable feature whenever I worked through the list and had to look somewhere else to return to the previous item.

Also I found out during these days of misery that they don't sell earpods for iPod Shuffle which last just a couple of months before cracking here and there - since they won't sell me new ones I have no compunction of repairing mine using neon-coloured silicon and fimo from now on telling everybody who asks me - well that is Apple-quality.

It seems those 10 days of utter misery will have lasting consequences.

I gave up on iTunes 11.1 after a couple of days. I uninstalled 11.1 and reinstalled 11.0.5. This was helped by the fact that I usually download updates and keep them, so that if I need to return to a previous version, I can do so with relative ease. The downside is that now I cannot sync my iPad Mini running iOS7, which I have really enjoyed using, with iTunes.

11.1.1 addresses the deletions problem (though not the continuous playing problem). I've revised my description in the hope of making it clearer:

Only the most recent episode shows when you first subscribe. In the default  'My Podcasts' view click 'Old episodes' to show earlier episodes, click 'Done' to hide them or 'Add all' to keep them there and also add them to List view.

Alternatively, in 'List' view control- or right-click on the name of the podcast or the episode and choose 'Show old episodes' to reveal all the previous episodes.

In both views you can now delete both downloaded or un-downloaded episodes from both views by control- or right-clicking on the name of the episode.

In both views each episode now has a blue circle to the left showing it can be played as a stream without downloading it first (so you don't have to wait for it to download fully). Click the cloud icon at right to download it (as you will have to to sync it to an iPod). Note that if you click the cloud icon to the right of the title of the podcast itself, rather than an episode, you will initiate a download of all episodes.

    Hi Roger,

Thanks so much for the description and instructions -- and for alerting us to the 11.1 release. I particularly appreciated learning how to show old episodes in List view. If I might ask, how did you find out about that particular trick? Is there an explanation of ways to utilize the revised iTunes that I missed? I never would have figured out the right-click thing!

    Thanks again.

    Chris

I figured out most of it by experiment, then after I'd posted my original notes someone else posted the contextual menu option in List, so I added that. It's all a nonsense, when the operational method isn't obvious and most people can't work it out, and there aren't any clear instructions.
