I accidently pulled the wrong plug out of my socket strip, and disconnected my LaCie external hard drive.

It was switched on, but not backing up at the time.

When I plugged it back in, my Mac came up with a warning message that I should only dismount from the Finder ; and something along the lines that it would attempt any necessary repairs.

There have been no further messages : is it safe therefore to assume there was no harm done ?

p.s. it happened apropos of reading about electricity drainage even if certain equipment is switched off, but still plugged in ; and I thought I was unplugging my DAB

               - does an external hard drive draw power even if it is switched off at the back, and if so is it OK to unplug it when not in use ?

               - these items are all plugged in to a surge protector strip. Is it also OK to disconnect plugs while the strip is switched on ?

It is always recommended to unmount removable drives before disconnecting. This even includes camera cards. That being said, if the drive appears to working as expected, it's probably fine.

If the exteranl drive is off, it's fine to uplug it if from the strip, if the strip is still on.
