Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

    The warranty in Europe works as follows:

    During the first year the manufacturer (Apple) is responsible for providing the warranty and giving the customer the required service.

    However - and here comes the unfair part- the European Law describes that during the second year it is the store where you have bought your phone from - and not the manufacturer- (in this case Apple) that is responsible for providing you the warranty and support. This leaves Apple fully of the hook.

     

    The store by law has to give the customer warranty while they themselves are not able to claim warranty from Apple in return. (Apple only gives one year of warranty)

    With the low margins stores make on selling iPhones they suddenly are now also legally responsible for replacing or repairing Apple phones at their own cost.

    The reply of consumer organizations is that it is up to the independent shops to negotiate on this with Apple. Yeah right. I wish every store the best of luck trying to negotiate with companies like Apple, or whatever other global brand. There is no interest in any negotiation with a shop that might sell "only' hundreds even "only" thousands of phones annually.

     

    Thus the shop has no choice: if they don't sell Apple: their customers will go somewhere else..

    And Apple smiles: They can state customers have two years of warranty, while during the second year it is the store that has to provide the warranty and pays the bill. Not Apple.

    As one shop owner told me: "I have to sell 50 iPhones to recover the costs of 1 defective iPhone.... "

     

    The Law here in Europe should be rewritten in that it is not the store being responsible for two years warranty, but the manufacturer. That would would be more fair, would solve a lot of problems and could enhance the production of more reliable goods, since manufactureres will make sure their products will last longer.

     

    I just read an article a few days ago: "Apple Reports Q3 2013 Quarterly Results: $6.9 Billion Profit" 

    I think this fully justifies that the law should be changed.

    iPhone 4s 32gb bought online from the applestore, 1,5 years ago, for €799,- euro's!!!!

    Same problem started a few months ago when WiFi went off occassionally.

    Just outside the warranty period.

    À week ago i installed iOS 7 and i thought it worked because i had full time WiFi again.

    Just now i lost my WiFi again and it even turned grey!!

    Where is the balance in this story?

    The phone became practically useless for me.

     

    Apple help!

     

    Ps in this case the manufacturer is the store, is there à 2nd year warranty for me?

    Let me sum up my observations in this discussion.

    Everyone having a problem in this discussion has the following problem:

     

    • All phone affected are IPhone 4s
    • All problems occured after the upgrade to iOS7
    • The issue we are experiencing is a greyed out WiFI button, which was not greyed out before.
    • We have tried all options advised by Apple to resolve this issue.
    • we are all unable to solve this problem ourselves constructively, although some of us have managed adhoc 'fixes' like hairdryers or using the fridge to 'cool off' the wifi chip.
    • Our iPhone 4s's  were operating without any noticable problems prior to the upgrade to iOS7

     

    The above makes me to draw the following conclusion:

    There is a clear pattern and these are obviously not individual cases. It appears the wifi chip of the iPhone 4s is being of a substandard quality and not being not fully compatible with the new iOS firmware which causes this problem. Also most of the beta testing over the past months was done using the iPhone 5 and not the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s. Mostlikely because the 4 series were not part of the large scale testing Apple was not fully aware of this accelerated issue with the Wifi chip (when you do a Google search on "iPhone greyed out wifi" you see that this issue is not new, and you see the issue involves mostly the 4s ) But it seems iOS 7 pushed these weak and thus unreliable wifi chips just over the edge, causing them to overheat and thus to stop functioning alltogether.

     

    Apple must be fully aware of this issue by now but they are incredibly silent in communicating with their in my estimation  'multiple thousands' of customers worldwide experiencing this problem. Apple only sticks by claiming the upgrade to iOS7 is "at your own risk" (that's what I was told) and sticking to the warranty period

    (I bought my iPhone in Aug 2012, so am out of Apple warranty)

     

    I feel that Apple should take their responsibility and help her customers in solving this quality issue.

    As customers in good faith we bought this product (I paid some €600) having trust in Apple and in the faith the quality would be such that we could use it -with good care of course- for at least 2, 3 or even 4 years.

     

    But unknown to her trusting consumers Apple created a product using a faulty wifi chip (hence the overheating issues which can eventually lead to failure)

    As result of this us, we, customers are now stuck with an unusuable iPhone for which we paid plenty of money.

     

    ( One thing I am sure of, if Apple would be a car manufacturer or an airplane manufacturer they would never get away with this, and would be forced to do a recall)

     

     

    My message to Apple:

    It is now time to act. Taking responsiblilty never hurts (even if you for some reason feel you are not fully to blame) It gives you credit. And credit gives you loyal customers.

    Rik, in the Netherlands: when you have purchased it directly from Apple, Apple is the supplier and therefor by law responsible for giving 2plus years of warranty. However this is only when you have purchased it as a consumer (als particulier) (B2C) When invoiced to a company you may only be given one year of warranty. (B2B)

     

    When purchased somewhere else than directly from Apple, you also have 2 years of warranty, but in that case Apple gives only the first year of warranty, and  the second and subsequent years your reseller has to provide the warranty out of his own pocket. (he can't claim it with Apple)

    Janusz here from Poland, trying to use 4S with iOS 7

     

    Same issue. I fully support all initiatives to push Apple for taking the responsibility.

    My iPhone is not doing his job anymore! Now I'm in the US for about two weeks and expect to pay horrible bill to my network provider. All thanks to Apple not solving the issue with iPhone 4S greyed wifi story. But the worst thing, in my opinion, is that Apple got the feedback about 4S problems when users were changing from iOS 5 to iOS 6. Look like they did nothing about it.

     

    Dear Apple,

    iPhone 4S users, as myself, are struggling. Take the responsibility or lose customers.

    You do not know the device was or was not defective ... the process of updating is in fact part of the update; therefore, making it the cause.  If you do not have additional experiences to share with the community, then maybe you should move on and find something productive to do?

    Got the same exact problem, went to apple store they replaced me with the new 4s.....it cost me 139 pounds!!!!!!! very big amount of money for an international student like me and the very very saddest thing is.............the wifi only lasted for 5 DAYS since I got the new replacement. I use pay&go O2 as my provider, is that one of the reason as well? I lost my personal hotspot as well, on of the guy on apple store said that I need to sort it out with O2 in terms of the personal hotspot. Someone can give me an advice???

    Hello all, better give a try on heating the upper back part of ur 4s with a hair dryer for 60 seconds as it was mentioned here and you will see ur wifi back to life, power off ur phone and heat it near the rear camera for 60 seconds and no more problems ( at least to me and the one who posted no problem so far)

    Hello All,

     

    I've had the same problem (4S with no wifi, out of warranty)
    I tried using various methods including replacing the wifi antenna, nothing worked.

    But I just tried using the hair dryer method, and it works!
    I was very much surprised to see it working again.

     

    I hope this solution will be permanent, will keep you posted.

    I tried hairdryer method. Suprisingly it worked. Just takes 60 sec. under hot air. My iphone was bloody hot. I can not hold him for a while. But after I turn on my phone, wifi was back online and bluetooth as well. So far so good.

    First I tried 1) changing my phone's name taking out the apostrophe, and it worked for 5 minutes, then 2) switching my network information HTTP PROXY from OFF to AUTO and it worked for 20 minutes... And I was reluctant to do the temperature tricks but desperate times need desperate measures so I gave in and 3) tried the hair dryer and I was also surprised - REALLY SURPRISED - that it worked.... It's been 5 hours and it still going.... (and couldn't help wondering who and why someone tried this!)

    iv got a iphone 4s after be on the phone with apple that can not do nothing about it what i can c of this falt is when u update two ios7 its took that long its sent the wifi chip out appel not telling u this i have sent my compaint two whachdog i wood like all your support on this as we all did not want it and i think its a scam so u will bye the new iphone of the also u will not fix it unles u pay apple ££££ for what thay did

    Dear all,

    I decided to do this reply for help everybody. I´m from Argentina, I have an Iphone 4s 32GB purchased on June 2012.

    When I updated to Ios 7.00 no wifi issues. Last week I updated to 7.0.2 instantly starts wifi issues, over heating and stopped working. I was tried every I read in this post and others and nothing change. I Tried hard reset to factory settings and nothing. I am sure that the problem is with Ios 7.0.2, because the problem start at this moment.

    Anybody knows if Apple will release a fix for this bug?
