Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here are two helpful articles that I would recommend when experiencing issues with iTunes becoming unresponsive.
iTunes: May become unresponsive when connecting iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

iTunes for Windows Vista or Windows 7: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues

Thanks for the information. After posting this I spent a couple of hours on the phone with tech support and they walked me through these solutions. Unfortunately we weren't able to solve it (though the support person was very helpful). I ended up deleting iTunes and all of the associated database files. I did a re-boot, re-installed iTunes, and re-built my library. I had no issues for a couple of hours until I re-subscribed to some of my podcasts. When subscribing and downloading I had no issue. When I did manual refreshes (to get older episodes) it froze again.
I'm not sure what is going on here or where to go from here. I may just have to wait for a new version. I should have noted that I'm on 11.1.1.11. I did not experience this problem with any regularity with previous versions.
I'll also note that this occured with no devices (iPod, iPhone, iPad) connected or synching via wireless.
Thanks. I'd appreciate whatever additional help you can provide.

Nov 2, 2013 1:47 PM in response to maedwar3by You,I'm having this same issue. I don't want to lose all my playlists & metadata (playcounts, ratings, etc…) but I'm getting so frustrated with the freezes and SBODs that I'm about ready to delete my iTunes Library.itl files and see if things improve by rebuilding from scratch or by using the iTunes Library.xml.
FWIW, I lost most of the music in my iTules library this summer and have been re-ripping my CDs and adding files back as I can. Probably 2/3 of my collection is still missing.

Sep 20, 2014 12:58 AM in response to Youby fatedninjabunny,Hi, I face this issue constantly. Even tried going back to an older version of itunes but my whole library has been moved to the new version so is not compatible. So frustrated. I will never upgrade with apple again. I need a new media player - can anyone recommend one?

Sep 20, 2014 1:05 AM in response to maedwar3by ssschmidt,The current version of iTunes is 11.4, so that could be causing difficulties.
