If you scroll to the bottom you will see the list of supported devices for Airdrop by the footnote (5)

apple, i would love to know what's the official reason for not having airdrop on my 4s, other then the obvious answer ("because we want you to buy the new version") , i dont feel that i have an old product.

Progress in the sense that hardware becomes obsolete and it is not backwards compatible. That has been the story in the electronics world ever since Edison invented the gramophone in 1877.
