Q: Airplay works on iTunes but does not work on macbook pro

Show in menu bar option enabled in Displays System Prefs.

If you have a cable, i'd see if it will connect and show that way..... either which way, please post if you can, so we can go from there

2nd gen AppleTV (or later).

Standard Airplay works as you describe above. Airplay Mirroring requires the Mac hardware you have + a 2nd generation AppleTV.

Sorry. The last thing I can think of is make sure the AppleTV and Mac are on the same network.

On the mac, try doing a pram reset, and retry. Also, try in a new user, and in safe mode, and see if it works in either, if the pram reset doesn't work

I am having the exact same issue.  I can stream to my ATV 2 through ITunes, but I see no icon to use.  I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro.  I should have had it from the get go right?

Im using macbook pro2013 and my airplay device works very well on my itunes, but it does not work when i try it to listen to music from youtube. It looks like my macbook only works on apple tv, but it does work on itunes. help please?

I've been having a problem very similar. I would like to connect my wife's macbook to our apple tv as well but no matter what I try the airplay icon doesn't appear, I can only do it through iTunes.  I got an apple tv 3rd gen. and her mac is a 2012 like mine and on mine it works perfect. I've been looking all over the internet but there's nothing. if anyone could help I would be very thankful... thank you very much.

I had the same issue with my 2011 macbook air and was able to solve the issue.

Go into System Preferences>Display and then check the box that reads "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available".

For some reason this was not automatically checked for me.

Try holding the option button (next to command) and click the speaker icon on the top. I use this to play music on my pioneer receiver.
