Oct 6, 2013 6:23 AM in response to mralissonby Barney-15E,2nd gen AppleTV (or later).
Standard Airplay works as you describe above. Airplay Mirroring requires the Mac hardware you have + a 2nd generation AppleTV.

Apr 14, 2015 9:18 PM in response to mralissonby vi_llavicencio,I've been having a problem very similar. I would like to connect my wife's macbook to our apple tv as well but no matter what I try the airplay icon doesn't appear, I can only do it through iTunes. I got an apple tv 3rd gen. and her mac is a 2012 like mine and on mine it works perfect. I've been looking all over the internet but there's nothing. if anyone could help I would be very thankful... thank you very much.

Jun 7, 2015 5:51 PM in response to mralissonby Kriix,I had the same issue with my 2011 macbook air and was able to solve the issue.
Go into System Preferences>Display and then check the box that reads "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available".
For some reason this was not automatically checked for me.
