Q: Is there a Mac disk utility?

I've had this Macbook Pro Retina Display for over 9 months and was wondering if I should try to "clean" the disk to improve performance or create more space.

Normally, no "cleaning" is necessary.  In fact, some "cleaning" programs cause more trouble than they putatively fix. "Cleaning" is largely a PC type of maintenance strategy.

If you have, say, 15% free disk space you should be good to go.

You can use Activity Monitor (Utilities folder) to see what free disk space you have (and monitor CPU, RAM and other things).  There is a "Disk Utility" in your Utilities folder which can be used to check your disk for errors.  It's a good idea to run that thing every once in a while; particularly before trying any system updates.

How full is the hard drive?

Right click on the hard drive icon and select Get Info. The importaznt numbers are Capacity and Available.

(If your mouse does not have a right click, hold the control key down and click on the icon.)

    Hi..

Your Mac runs maintenance in the background for you > Mac OS X: About background maintenance tasks

Better to not use third party cleaning utilities. Let your Mac do it's job for you.

If you are concerned about enough free disk space, cick your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage

Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.

Disk Utility is primarily used for verifying the starutp disk, permissions, reformatting, or partitioning the hard drive.

Disk Utility is located in HD > Applications > Utilities
