I have an Epson Perfection 4490 Photo with same problem and message. The Epson site refers me to (Apple) Software Update which refers me to App Store which tells me there are no updates.

I have a 4490 and ran into the same problem. Epson has never updated the drivers to support either Lion or Mountain Lion. There is a third party application to do this, but I don't remember it off-hand. I have a VMWare virtual Windows machine installed and used the Epson Windows drivers instead (it works). I have not tried the Image Capture or Preview path yet.
