Oct 7, 2013 3:39 PM in response to Slicebackby LaPastenague,★HelpfulUse ethernet connections.. turn off the wireless. When ever you do firmware updates it is always a good idea to use ethernet anyway.. much less to go wrong.
BTW upgrading to 7.6.4 on an old extreme might be a really bad idea.. I would simply ignore the upgrade notice.. 7.6.1 was ok, but 7.5.2 is still better for most users on this older equipment.

Oct 7, 2013 7:13 PM in response to LaPastenagueby Sliceback,Really grateful for the help. Oops, too late on update.
Was able to accomplish that somehow prior to reading your response.
Now trying to extend network with airport express(1st generation).
Getting exact same error message .
the original airport express utility CD doesn't work and the current
Airport app apparently is incompatible.
Any thoughts ? Upgrade to new router(s)? Or Run the 2 as separate networks for
Upstairs and downstairs?
Thank you,

Oct 7, 2013 9:24 PM in response to Slicebackby LaPastenague,Load 5.6 utility into the computer.. it isn't hard.. here is one method.
How to load 5.6 into later Lion & ML
1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
2. Download and install unpkg.
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.
When you use a real utility and not the toyworld v6 amazing things happen.. you can see everything but the very latest products.. and even those show up albeit with some errors.
Use ethernet.. if you lose connection do not use wireless.. use ethernet.
And factory reset.. do setups in full network isolation..
If it is not dead it can be setup.

Oct 8, 2013 2:22 PM in response to Slicebackby LaPastenague,Ok, you already have 5.6 utility.
You do not need to run a single wireless network.. and extend wireless is the worst possible method.
If you have ethernet between floors then use each Apple router as WAP and setup roaming network.. do not extend.
See info for roaming.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260
The basics are simple.. same wireless name.. same security same password.. different wireless channel.
The document can be used as basis for any setup.. it does not have to be two apple routers even.. any pair of routers will work fine. The main idea is ethernet as backbone to it. And two separate WAP with the same setup bar channel. (To prevent interference).
