Q: I follow this process Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences, then click iCloud. However I don't have an icloud options, just mobileme.  I tehrefore can't buy the plan and my email is currently disabled because of capcity.  How do i buy a plan then?

The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mountain Lion preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is non non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.

 

You can only buy extra iCloud storage on  Lion/Mountain Lion Mac, and iOS5 or above device, or a Windows 7/8 PC. If you can't get access to one of these - perhaps a friend would let you sign in temporarily to puchase the storage - your only options are to go to http://icloud.com and remove as much data as you can to get below 5GB, or to upgrade your Mac, provided that it meets the requirements.

 

The requirements for Lion are:

 

  • Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
  • 2GB of memory
  • OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
  • 7GB of available space

 

To purchase it you will have to ring Apple at the number given at the bottom left of this page.

  • OS X v10.6.8 or later
  • 2GB of memory
  • 8GB of available space

 

and the supported models are:

 

  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)

  • Xserve (Early 2009)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

 

It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).

 

You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

    Hi jtoshaughnessy,

     

    A minimum of Mac OS X 10.7.2 is required to use iCloud on the Mac. If you go to the Apple () menu in the upper left of the screen, then About this Mac, what does it say for Version?

    Hi,

     

    It says Mac OS X version 10.6.8.  I assume that means i need to update my software by clicking software update?

    Thanks for that.  The easiest way appears to be just to delete some of the backup on icloud.  Ive searched how to do it an it appears that i need to actually get into the icloud con on my mac to do it, which is the orginal problem.  Is there a way to, to say delete all my camera backups, by just logging in on the icloud website?

    How did you manage to make camera backups if you have Snow Leopard? In any case you can only back up iOS devices, not Macs. You can access email on Snow Leopard, and calenders by a hack, but not contacts or anything else.

     

    If you were a MobileMe subscriber your contacts, calendars and email would have been migrated to iCloud but nothing in your iDisk - that was all deleted. You can access email, calendars and contacts on the iCloud website - you might as well delete all the contacts because they aren't syncing with your Mac. It's difficult to see how you could have built up a large amount of data; the problem is that you can't check the usage without the iCloud preference pane.
