Oct 9, 2013 1:21 AM in response to Reini-Wienby Reini-Wien,...and it is happening again
Dear Apple guys, could someone please try to find the cause, so that we do not have color games everytime a new iOS or iTunes version comes out?
Thank you so much!

Oct 9, 2013 2:31 AM in response to Reini-Wienby Haasome,Yes -- same thing again here. Same as last time, except I can't even force it back temporarily. Default is now purple on all devices. This is really annoying and made me less confident in iCloud in general.

Oct 9, 2013 2:55 AM in response to Reini-Wienby Pacopass1,Same problem happened to me this morning.
On iphone, color change works, but when I open iCal on my Mac (10.8.5), colors change to certain default.
To solve my issue, I performed the following steps:
1. Export each calendar separately to the desktop
2. Rename the current calendar to something else
3. Create a new calendar with teh name and color I want
4. Import the exported calendar into the newly created calendar
5. Delete the old calendar (renamed in step 2)
PS: check our idevices calendars subscription after performing the above to make sure your iDevice is showing your new calendars.
Now colors work fine.

Oct 9, 2013 3:30 AM in response to Reini-Wienby EML57,I have the same problem with 2 exceptions, compared to what I've seen from the other posts:
1) My iPhone seems not to be affected by the problem. Actually, there was one time when the events changed colour to yellow on the Mac (this is the customized colour I chose on the iPhone) while the colour name on MAC was blue (the default one). They both realigned to blue on the Mac after a refresh, but the iPhone retains the yellow colour.
2) None of the calendars I use are shared. They are just the iCloud calendars, used only by one person, me.
It all started a couple of days ago and it's very annoying and confusing.

Oct 9, 2013 4:08 AM in response to Reini-Wienby Bubblehead360,Yes annoying and concerning!
I noticed it when my Work calendar on my iPad suddenly turned purple this morning. Thanks to Pacopass1 though - I tried doing that with just the calendar that kept changing (in my case Work to purple) and this seems to have done the trick. It's now back as it was on desktop, iPad and iCloud.
Does knock one's confidence in iCloud

Oct 9, 2013 4:20 AM in response to Reini-Wienby teryg,Yes, it's happening again, though so far only on my work calendar. Haven't checked on my mobile devices, just the laptop.

Oct 9, 2013 6:38 AM in response to Reini-Wienby TenneyThe2nd,Mine is doing the same thing. I though there would be one place where I could change it and it would push out to the others, but that doesn't seem to be the case. My primary calendar was Orange for the longest time, but now it keeps turning Purple.
Here's where I've tried to change it:
icloud.com via Safari 6 on OS X Lion
iCal on OS X Lion
Calendar App on iOS 7
Sunrise Calendar on iOS 7
On each one of these, I am able to change the color back to Orange, but within a minute or less, it is back to Purple. The only exception is iCal on Lion. It retains my color change even through calendar refreshes, but when the app is quit and relaunched, the changes have not persisted and the Orange calendar is now Purple again.

Oct 9, 2013 6:50 AM in response to Pacopass1by EML57,I followed Pacopass1 adive and tried the same.
The side effect is that by deleting events with invitees, the system wants to send a cancellation notification to all, no way to avoid that.
This is even worse than the changed colour.

Oct 9, 2013 6:58 AM in response to Reini-Wienby reitermoritz,Maybe it helps if as many people as possible report the issue here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ical.html
I guess it should at least raise more awareness of the problem on Apple's side then just posting a "me too" here.
