Every time I try to install additional instruments it says downloading, then when it does software update it says "no updates found". This is the same whether I pick "install now" or "install later" and then manually do software update. Garage band came preloaded on my comp, so the reinstalling is not an option without paying for the app in app store. I wouldn't mind the 15$, but I don't even know if that would fix the problem, plus the app is already on my computer so there must be a way to make it work?

Every time I try to install additional instruments it says downloading, then when it does software update it says "no updates found".

"No updates found" can happen for several reasons:

    • Wrong folder: When you moved GarageBand to a different folder - if you removed it from the Applications folder to a subfoder, or renamed it, put it back. GarageBand must be installed directly in "Applications" and named simply "GarageBand" without any additions like version numbers.
    • Wrong AppleID: When you are signed into the Mac App Store with a different Apple ID then you used, when you set up your Mac originally. Try to sign ito the App Store with your AppleID, open the "Updates" tab and enter the key combination ⌘R  to reload the "Updates" panel. Do you now see an GarageBand update?
    • Network problems: Turn off all fire walls and anti virus filters, that might prevent the App Store from connecting to the servers.
    • Insufficient permissions: Try to run this installer from a user account with Administrator privileges.

Garage band came preloaded on my comp, so the reinstalling is not an option without paying for the app in app store.

You can reinstall the bundled iLife Applications that came with your mac.

    • Did your Mac come with Mountain Lion or Lion? Then you can download GarageBand from the AppStore again for free.  They should show on the "Purchased" Tab of the AppStore. If they don't, you need to "Accept" them first on the "Purchased" tab of the App Store, see this support document: OS X Mountain Lion: Reinstall apps that came with your Mac

If you still do not see the update there, post back.  You may need to try  the manual install, as described by mteep:

Re: GarageBand '11 won't download additional loops

If that does not work, uninstall  and trash the preferences, see Dagon's post:

I just noticed - the Apple online store was down due to maintainance this morning - but it should be up and running again by now - perhaps you just need to try again.

Hey guys, I was able to find the answer by looking in another thread. Thanks for the replies though.

Turns out the problem for me was that I had moved Garage Band to the desktop, and (unknowingly) took it out of the applications folder. I am so used to creating shortcuts via drag and drop in windows that I didn't realize the directory issues this causes with OSX.

    Cheers!

    You are welcome!

Thanks for letting us know, that it was again a wrong folder.  The "loops wan't install" problem is so so annoying for many posters here.
