The only way to get old text messages back, is to restore from an old backup via iTunes on a computer or iCloud. If you haven't been backing up to those, then you're sadly not going to be able to retrieve them.

As already stated, you can restore your most recent backup, however, this will overwrite anything you have changed on the phone since the last backup.
If you just want to see the messages and not actually restore them to the phone, and if they are in the most recent iPhone backup in iTunes, you can use one of the many iPhone backup extractor programs available.
