Q: Home directory on external hard drive?

I've been having problems with filevault. I backed up my home directory to an external hard drive, and now can't get it back. Can anyone give me a step by step guide?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Don't have a step by step since I've never done such a thing, but suggest that you start with a google search for move users directory site:apple.com
