I have started using I-Movie 11 for the first time a week ago. I have imported in the event library a very long clip (I guess a hour long)

and I'm unable to split this long clip in the event browser so that I can import in the project only the pieces that I see worth to copy

for subsequent editing in the project library. Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

Izzy Video has a new free tutorial on iMovie. I think section 5 addresses your question.

I have no connection to him, but think his tutorials are great.

The workaround is to, firstly, delete a few frames (maybe just one) at the point where you wish to split the clip in the Event. Then it's possible to move clips that have been split into a new Event. You will lose a few frames (maybe one) in the proces, but this may not be noticeable, depending on where you remove them, of course. Try to select a point where the action changes from one scene to another, for example.

Here are two iMovie Help topics that show how to delete frames, and to then move split clips into separate Events:

Delete unwanted video clips (or frames) from an Event -

    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3ac6a93f

Split an Event in two -

    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3ac6a2e4

This may appear cumbersome, but can be done quite quickly and easily.

Just re-reading your first post Angus, I thought I should add some extra information.

You really don't need to split the hour long Event. Just click on the start point of the section you wish to include in the project, then drag across the clip to the approximate end point. The section will then be highlighted with a yellow border. Drag this highlighted section to the project (or just press the E key on the keyboard). Continue this process for any other segments you want in the project.

Here's a link to the iMovie Help topic on this:

    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3a624010

In the left margin of the Help topic you will see many other topics regarding creating and managing projects (among other topics). Some of these have video tutorials. Well worth a look!

Having said all that in my previous post, the IzzyVideo tutorial (Section 5) that Hugh linked to earlier describes perfectly how to bring video into a project from the Event clips. Here's a direct link to that video tutorial:
