I can't restore because it won't go into disk mode, and itunes won't recognize it. I've tried different USB cables and do have the lates version of itunes. Hardware issue?

Almost certainly.
Although the technical details are incorrect (the iPod has no "lens" or "needle"), user munoz4415 describes a technique - an act of desperation - that you may find worth considering before giving up on your iPod and disposing of it:
Dropped iPod. Red "X" on reset. Tried everything. Anything else I can do?
To fix it properly is likely to require replacing its hard disk. If you're interested in that consider using iFixit's detailed instructions:
