Q: I bought a used macbook pro from a friend. Software updates are available, but when I try to update, the computer asks for apple id and will only accept the former owner´s. How can I connect my macbook to my apple id?

    Yes there is.

Command + R = regular recovery = installs currently installed version (and requires Apple ID) - nothing will be deleted.

Command + Option + R = internet recovery = includes disk utility. HD can be erased and original OS version will be reinstalled IF that was Lion or Mountain Lion and drive is erased. If it is Snow Leopard or earlier, then install disks are required.

Unless OP's machine came with Lion or ML,  they need to call Apple, give them the serial number, and ask for replacement disks.

In any case, the machine needs to be wiped in order for the buyer to reinstall the OS using their own Apple ID.

That is the new way - easy digital download/frustrating licensing requirements.

    I found it! OS X 10.8.3

You need to figure out which OS version was installed originally - what is installed now is presenting you with the problem.

Either post the info macjack asked for or call Apple and give them your serial number - they will know.

As I said, you will need to wipe the drive in order to get the machine's OS installed under your own Apple ID - that is the only way it will work.

Depending on which version was installed originally, the methods to fix the problem will differ.

Hi; Hope you fixed your problem already. I just noticed your post.

In case not. I see it's OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). Simplest is to start over after you've backed up any of your stuff. Also, make sure you have purchased ML yourself in the App Store.

Boot the machine holding down "Alt" (Some call it Option).

Boot choices will appear. Select the recovery HD. Then choose to re-install the operating system.

It will reinstall on your Apple ID (because you bought ML in the App Store) and be as if you'd just bought the machine as new.

Recover your stuff and it's forgotten it's previous owner.

Actually, the OP did not buy Mountain Lion; if it was not preinstalled on the machine, then the seller is legally obligated to wipe the drive and reinstall the original OS which obviously was not Mountain Lion. Therefore, the OP is unable to reinstall the OS as the license is not transferable. The recovery option requires the Apple ID to match the ID which was used to purchase ML.

Boot the machine holding down "Alt" (Some call it Option).

Not so. Apple's labeled it as the option key, and marked it with an additional alt reference on the key's top so windoze users would know what option key means.

Boot the machine holding down "Alt" (Some call it Option).

The correct Mac name for the key is, "Option," not, "Alt." The "Some" calling it "Option," would be all of the Mac community.
