Q: Is there a way to review personal posts to the forums.
Idle curiosity, that'a all, but is there a way I can use the system to see some of my very early posts or indeed, find out how many I have ever written.

You can see how many posts that you have made by clicking the 'reply' button on one of your own posts and then going into the advanced editor ('use advanced editor above the reply box) and it should show under your id below the reply box : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5221
For the posts that you've made, if you click on the 'Your Stuff' button toward the top right of each page on here and click on 'Discussions' you should get a list of of the threads that you've posted on which you can then page through them
