Oct 11, 2013 2:53 PM in response to Fitz50by jimthing,On moving from an iPhone 5 to 5S, I too had the same issue with VV not working, and more annoyingly I also lost saved VV messages as well (highly annoyingly)!
FYI, this can happen quite a lot when you move from one device to another, or move sims, and suchlike.
I phoned my carrier (O2 UK) and they didn't have a clue on how to recover the lost messages whatsoever (they said this was something the device stores away from your voicemail on the carrier's servers). But they checked my general voicemail settings, and somehow managed to tweak them on their end to make them start working again (I tested it to confirm).
My understanding is voicemail is run by your carrier, and most of them (certainly O2, in my case) do not store messages after 30 days. So if you actually *ring* your voicemail to listen to them, they wont be there after that time.
From what the O2 agent told me on the phone, *VISUAL voicemail* messages are stored on the device itself, so are not deleted after the 30 day period, but do stay stored on the device (hence why messages from a LONG while after that 30 days are still shown in VV on iPhones).
For some reason they do not seem to be backed-up in iTunes or iCloud backup. I contacted AppleCare, and they also didn't have much of an idea, simply referring me to a knowledgebase article, aunder the tab "iTunes will back up the following information", here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
Not very good of Apple to not backup this stuff, fo no reason.
...BTW, as a work around, in the end I simply manually recorded the VV messages on my old iPhone 5 to my 5S using the Voice Memos app, titling them with the date/time appearing on the iPhone 5. (they should also get backed-up to iTunes, as a bonus. ;-)
Hope this helps.

Oct 11, 2013 3:42 PM in response to jimthingby jimthing,Things that are missing from iOS:
1) No export function on VV messages.
2) No mass export function on iMessages/SMS/MMS messages.
3) No phoncall recording.*
*Probably due to legal issues (being illegal without making the other party aware in most territories) ...although *I think* Android offers this funnily enough?
Bit strange IMO, as you can keep text from messages in perpetuity (whereever that's being done), but for some reason not audio. Perhaps authorities feel people say things more readily when speaking that they don't do in written form, or something — haha, tell that to Twitter users!

Oct 12, 2013 3:56 PM in response to jimthingby Fitz50,I discovered I had my "cellular data" button turned off. I was surprised to see a visual voicemail come through, once my cellular data was back on.

Oct 12, 2013 4:14 PM in response to Fitz50by Lawrence Finch,★HelpfulGood catch! Yes, VVM uses the carrier's cellular network point to point. VVM messages do not travel over the Internet. So WiFi doesn't help.

Nov 15, 2013 9:43 AM in response to Fitz50by puneet_t,I was facing the the same annoying problem. I found a solution to this. No need to soft reset or go to settings..
SOLUTION: 1) Just close the 'Phone' app (by double pressing the home button and swiping the app in the top direction) and 2) open your voice mail list again. Voila!! Problem solved.
In short, just restart the App.
Cheers!
