Q: safari has lags after new router installed

On my G5 Power Mac running 10.5.8

I use a hawking HWDN2A USB wireless adapter

I have an Xfinity modem

I added a linksys E2500 router about 40 feet away

Prior to all he new router, the xfinity modem has its own built in (not very good) router. The router was turned off by Comcast when we installed the new router.

There are 4 different computers in this house, this Mac and 3 different HP laptops running either Vista or 7

In order to upgrade speeds, we added the new router. The result is much better speed. On my Mac, using Speedtest by OOkla, I average around 18.5 Mbps download/ 3.5 upload.

The computer running Windows 7 (Firefox browser) works fine. It's pages load quickly. I tried Firefox on this Mac, same results as Safari.

Now Safari is acting weirdly. Cached webpages load quickly, as before. However, a request for a new page can take up to 10 seconds to begin to load. It seems indiscriminate. Some sites load up immediately, some take forever. Also, in Safari's google search field, an intial search takes about 5 seconds; from the Google site, it's instantaneous. Both were instantenous with the old router.

I've followed a bunch of suggestions from these forums.

1. Changed DNS to ones recommended by namebench after I ran a number of tests using that application.

2. Changes channels on the router

3. cleared DNS cache using terminal (dscacheutil -flushcache)

4. Added a new location, using OpenDNS DNS servers (copied IP address, subnet mask, and router setting from the active location)

5. Ran applejack AUTO for a deep cleaning and permissions repair, just in case.

Nothing.  No change.

There must be something I*'m missing. Any ideas?

If they're separate you may need to try both, but likely the new Router.

Hey, I'm back for a few hours. Thought I'd try your suggestions, but I have some questions:

    1. This aluminum foil barrier, how high should it be? The phone base is less than 4 inches high. Surround it, or parabolic shape away from router? Or some other shape/size

2, Both devices are at the same level. Would it help to place one on the floor? I don't think waves would be affected, but I'm a bit out of my league here.

    3. Regarding Wireless G:  If I change the router to Wireless G only setting, will I have to make any setting adjustments of the Mac? THe HP windows (two running Vista, one rtunning 7)? What effect will using only Wireles G have?

    4. The computer seems to be running faster today just to mess with me. However, the person who owns the phone is out of town for the day, so the phone is not being used. Is there more interference during actual phone use or is it constant, regardless of usage (just operational)?

Thanks BDAqua.  I think I can see ther light at the end of the tunnel. Though it might be an oncoming train.

never mind on the speeding up announcement. Some pages seem to load faster, but overall problem persists.

also, the wireless adapter is reporting more errors than yesterday. See below, if it means anything beyong what we're already doing...

    1. Any shape should do, parabolic possibly the besy, just so it blocks direct beams between the 2.

    2. Router higher in the room generally works better for me.

    3. If all computers can do g, then no problem or ajustments should be needed I think.

    4. Yes, more when being used, but the base station can still interfere.

I'm back in town. Hope you remember this thread from the end of September...

Sadly, nothing is working that you've suggested. Covering the phone in aluminum foil didn't have any effect, nor did switching to wireless G Only.  I've tried various channels in Wireless G only, but no change.

I'm still getting lots of retrys and some pages are taking forever to load (apple.com being -ironically- the worst. four minutes to load up the splash page, three more to get over to support).

inlcuding the grabs of router panel and adapter stats.

    Any other ideas?

Things of gotten kind of weird.  Apple site no longer comes up at all. No part of Apple.com will  load up at all. And other sites that were loading pretty fast are now completely slowed. I'm writing to you through my iPhone at this point. No other way to do it. And on my phone your last entry does not show up for some strange reason. This is getting extremely frustrating. I tried disabling the 5 GHz wireless setting per your suggestion. Nothing changed. I don't know what to do at this point. I don't know why certain sites no longer load, especially apple

Your last entry finally updated. So at least something works.

I reset Safari and got the sites to load again. Apple is still (and has been throughout this ordeal) slow to load, but at least it's loading. On the other hand, both your last post and my two posts are not updating on the computer, though they show in the discussions "menu" ("last post by bdAqua 38 minuters ago" and so on).

i'm including 5 current router panels to see if anything strikes you. Please let me know if I need to delete anything that I'm publicly posting here, or do it yourself if you are able.

The forum SW here, called Jive is terrible, if last post link goes nowhere, just post a reply with nothing but a period, likely the last reply will then show!?

Hmm do I have access to your Screen Shaaring? A few people have allowed me to control their Mac remotely to try to ferret out problems, but if I did have for yours I've forgotten.

I don't even know what screen sharing is, so you probably don't have mine. How does it work? I'm frustrated enough go for anything at this point. Including dumping this router in the ocean.
