iPad SD Card Reader supports SD standards up to SDHC, miniSD and microSD with adapters, and MMC.
SDXC is not supported.

Oct 12, 2013 7:40 AM in response to jordyrogers94by MaxPower100,Yes you should be able to use a card reader to import photos from an SD card onto your iPad mini.
Once the card reader is plugged into the iPad mini charge socket, with the SD card inserted in the other end, your iPad should automatically open a page that has thumbnails of the photos on the SD card. You click on the photos you want to select (a blue circle with tick should appear on each photo selected) and then you press the import button. Alternatively you can press the import all button. When the photos are imported the blue circle will turn green. The photos will now be available when you click on the Photo icon.
Might need more info with what exactly isn't working. Does nothing appear when you plug in the SD card reader?
