Dear Erinnx, your theory is correct.

In the Description of the SMART Notebook for iPad app there is a brief statement about displaying content.  It says: "Show content from an iPad on an interactive whiteboard for the whole class to see using AirPlay and an Apple TV or using an HDMI or VGA cable with the proper connectors".

I'm assuming you prefer a wireless connection based on your interest in Bluetooth support.  For further information about using Airplay, there is a page titled "How to use AirPlay Mirroring" with an iPad generation 2 or 3 on Apple Support. It is here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5209

Also, there is a software update to SMART Notebook for iPad which is coming soon which addresses feature requests we have received about this app.

    Sincerely,

    Cool, but just to clarify:

Air play will work for display.

Will the hdmi/dock ipad cable work for the interactive touch and sound element? That seems to be a key thing to really utilize the board's advantages in class.

Also was the coming update to do with the touch part?

Thanks for replying so quickly Smart!

The HDMI cable will carry  audio output from the iPad to the connected audio device.  However the iPad does not have driver software to support interactivity at the SMART Board.  Control over what is displayed on the SMART Board through projector stays with the iPad user.  After the upcoming update, new features will be added however the setup will still be one where the iPad's display & activity is projected one-way to the SMART Board.

Here is my solution that doesn't use an Apple TV.

Turn your laptop into an Airplay receiver with this software (Mac & PC compatible: http://www.airserver.com/ ). No HDMI needed. No Apple TV needed. If your Mac or (Windows) PC can connect to a display of any kind (monitor, projector, Smartboard, etc.), you can use it to mirror your iPad's screen.

A few critiques about iPad and Smartboard integration:

First, know that the Smartboard app for iOS is underpowered and disappointing. You cannot control a Smartboard with an iPad. But you can set up your iPad in such a way that you can have nearly all of the Smartboard features. There are free shared whiteboard apps all over the app store. I suggest to get a copy of Keynote and iAnnotate... this will cover 90% of the features of a Smartboard.

Next, know that you cannot operate your iPad from the Smartboard. You can only use the Smartboard to display the screen of your iPad. In terms of classroom modality, this may be desirable. It effectively removes you from the front of the classroom and puts you on the side. You can do nearly everything using an iPad that you can do with the Smartboard... and then so much more.

Finally, you cannot record a class with the iPad like you can with the Smartboard. You may be able to use screen recording software for the Mac or PC running Airplay Server, but I have not tried this and doubt it would work.

There is also reflectorapp.com that will do mirroring via Airplay. It will also work with Windows XP. Airserver is very nice too. Just unfortunately it doesn't work with Windows XP.
