1. If you prefer using Firefox, use it by all means.
2. Empty caches often. That takes only two clicks.
Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
"Develop" menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
If your Mac is running v10.8.2, that could account for at least part of the problem with Safari.
Update to v10.8.5. Open System Preferences > Software Update > Check Now. Restart your Mac after all updates are installed then try Safari.
Have you emptied the Safari cache lately? Press Command + Option + E then quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect: Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

I am sorry to say that Safari here behaves terribly again - rainbow circle when trying to open most of the links, very slow behaviour - and funny enough it crashed just now when opening this discussion. I am not in the position of making some software analytical tests - this what Apple should do ? But returning to to starting point - having "the best Mac ever" , the latest OSX and Safari, having a fresh install 2 months ago, I have all reasons to be quite disappointed by Apple quality (both SW and HW - my MBP Retina has replaced motherboard, display etc, yet its behaviour is far from perfect ...considering the money I paid for that, it is quite shameful). I don't prefer Firefox, but unlike Safari it works, quickly and normally - as any other browser on any computer.
