Q: My 2010 27" iMac disk drive accepts music cd's but not dvd's?

My 2010 27" iMac disk drive accepts music cd's but not dvd's or software disks?

I have never used the drive for anything other than CD's, as I download all apps from the app store.

I bought a new camera and tried to use the spftware disk and it tried to read it but then spat it back out, I also tried Microsoft Office Mac and it did the same thing.

I then tried numerous DVDs and the same thing happened.

I did have the 3 year Apple Care but the ran out 3 months ago.....

Can anyone help???

Try resetting the SMC and PRAM

    To reset the SMC

    Shut down the computer.

    Unplug the computer's power cord.

    Wait fifteen seconds.

    Attach the computer's power cord.

Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM

    Shut down your Mac.

Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.

    Turn on the computer.

Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.

Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

    Release the keys.

This is simply a sign that your drive is dying. The explanation is probably that CDs and DVD's are not the same and that the focus of the laser is different.

You may try to clean the lens with an appropriate CD cleaner or by dismantling it but from my own experience it doesn't help. Mine failed the same way years ago (actually one year after I bought my 2008 iMac), but is still able to read commercial (not burned) DVDs...

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).

Go to your OS Help Menu.  In the search field type dvd

Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to  your issue.

You can also do the same in Disk Utility.  Open same up.

At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.

This will bring up the Help Menu.

*** Your drive may need cleaning.  Cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs. ***

If you do a lot of disc burning, you should run the "cleaning" at least 3 times in a row approximately every 3-6 months.

PERSONAL OPINION:  Because I hate slot loaders, purchasing an external "tray" burner is the best advice I can give.

Thanks for your help, could it really be dying if I've never used it though??

Hard to tell as slot drives are very finicky.  My G5 iMac iSight slot drive lasted until the day the iMac died 7 yrs later.  I burn a lot of CDs & DVDs.  Therefore, I cleaned my slot drive every 3 months & repaired permissions after each burning session.  Towards the last year of my iMac's death, I purchased an external burner and never looked back.
