Q: snow leopard issues

after erase and install, everything is running smooth again on my Mbp. but after using migration assistant to transfer my docs and whatnot, trouble starts up again, mostly spinning wheel and loooooooong delays. what could be causing it?  the spinning wheel and delays was the reason for my initial erase and install, disk couldn't be repaired in disk utility, invalid node structures and the like.

Migration and Setup Assistant work fine as long as there is no data corruption, your user data is.

Before you start all over again, copy only your users files, manually, don't use folders, to a regular external drive and unmount and disconnect.

Follow these instructions to erase (zero erase your ENTIRE) drive and reinstall Snow Leopard fresh again and update,

How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6

then install apps, then finally return files from the storage drive into the new account and then run #6 Repair Users Permissions. If you can't access the external storage drive, Finder > Get Info and check ignore permissions on this volume, then run #6 once the files are transferred over. But I don't think you will have a problem.

Do not restore Library or use Migration or Setup Assistant, install software from original clean sources only.

what are my user files? and should I put them on a memory stick as opposed to my main external hard disk which has my main time machine backup? to be honest I only need my keynote files, iTunes data and some of my applications.

sorry to be so brain dead...

I really appreciate the reply. just to confirm, you think my data is corrupted?

    iMarcy,

Your user files are the ones in your home folder, which contains applications, docs, music. photos, keynote, libraries, preferences, about everything that is not system.... all the stuff you have created/installed as the user.

I doubt it would fit on a stick, you can partition your TM disk, but I would buy a drive for archives and the like as well as using for data transfers and such, and not mess with my TM drive.
