Q: My PowerMac G5 Setup

Hello everyone, I have a couple of things I need help with.

I have just obtained a PowerMac G5 DP 1.8Ghz, upgraded to 1.5Gb RAM from eBay for £22!! It did not come with a HDD which is OK as I have plenty lying around, strangly enough a copy of OS X Leopard cost more than the PC itself. However I can deal with that.

The purpose of this machine is to act as a 'server' for all of my music, including iTunes library, all of my videos, and all of my pictures which are extremely precious to me. The purpose for them being on tis machine with Leopard is so I have Time Machine to backup to my Time Capsule. All of this will be on a 1.5Tb HDD that is secondary to a 500Gb HDD that the OS will reside on (and have lots of free space, but I didn't have anything smaller).

I have no problem installing the drive or the OS so far, hopefully it will not wipe the 1.5Tb drive with my data on when it is added as it is already Apple formatted and connected tot he back of the Time Capsule for now.

The questions I have are mainly to do with the general running of the machine.

I want to run it in an area of my home where it will be connected to the AC and Ethernet only, it will not have a kayboard, mouse and monitor connected to it, will this present a problem for the machine? I intend to administer it and work on it remotely from my MacBook, if this ispossible. I am hoping that I could do this via screen sharing, but does this work if the G5 doesn't have a screen attached?

Secondly, does it have to be running ALL the time, previous to my move to the light side all my PC's were windows based. Therefore the server I used could be set to sleep and then 'wake up' when it sensed it was needed from a signal on the LAN port, does mac have the same capability (I am fairly new to mac's but a quick learner).

Also, can I change the frequency that Time Machine backs-up? I don't want it backing up every hour of every day that it is on.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

1) It works if you've got to set up the Screen Sharing options on the PowerMac G5 with a screen first.

    2) if PowerMac G5 go into sleep mode, you can't wake him up from remote machines(OS may be Leopard, I assume), so you must set it up "never sleep" at System preferences -> Energy Saver.

    3) There is an application called Time Machine Editor, you can easily customize the frequency of your TimeMachine Backups.

    Thanks for this reply.

    1) I will be setting up the machine with a monitor attached (well TV at least) so once I then disconnect the screen I should be able to share the [no-existant] screen of the PowerMac onto my laptop to get into the system to make any changes that I need. This is excellent news, THANK YOU!

    2) D'oh, I hoped I would be able to set something on the mac that was akin to 'wake on LAN' but maybe this is not in the hardware of the machine, will have to think about this as from what I have heard PowerMacs are both noisy and power hungry. And yes I will be using Leopard as the OS, as I need the capability to use Time Machine.

    3) Thanks for the link, I will check it out, I assume that I can download that from their website and install as I will not have Mac App Store on Leopard. It's a shame that Apple don't include this functionality in the software, especially as the dialogue that comes up in preferences says that it can backup hourly, weekly and monthly.

    Thanks again!

Thanks, but I'm happy with Time Machine. Plays nice with my Time Capsule.

As an update I have got the machine fully set up and have answered my own questions pretty much.

I have OS X 10.5.8 running on the machine no problem (bought from eBay). Installed onto a 500Gb HDD that is devoted to the system and any apps that need to be installed.

I have also installed a second HDD (2Tb Seagate Baracuda) to act as the storage part of the machine and holds the media folder for iTunes, as well as the library (it's a shared library so is on the shared machine) and pictures, videos and any archive stuff I don't want on my MacBook. Just had to share this across the network, sadly I also seem to have shared the Macintosh HD (OS drive) as well and cannot get rid of it though I think this is more to do with account sharing.

I also have Time Machine running and it backs up to my 2Tb Time Capsule, yeah I know that is smaller than the total storage on the G5 before considering 2x MacBooks but there is plenty of room left, the combined backups probably only total 110Gb at the moment. I have also found that it backed up BOTH hard drives by default, so no exceptions needed. Have not installed the app suggested by kaz-k yet but will do when I next have time.

Screen sharing works even better than I though it would, the button just shows up when I click the shared computer (and thank you Apple for even making the icon the right shape for the G5), click that and the screen pops up, no need to be plugged into anything, works with just the power cord and the ethernet connected. It's lots of fun playing with that.

Newest update. OS HDD cloned onto a partition of a bigger drive. Total internal storage now stands as 3.5Tb over two discs.
