How do I search for exact duplicates and can I delete multiple copies at once?

Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls.

Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.

Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.

(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)

Thank you!  Also I have thousands of songs or tracks showing.  It happened inadvertantly when updating itunes.  It imported almost all the songs twice.  So in ref to the directions you give where it says don't send to recycle bin you mean to delete the tracks without using recycle bin?  Or are you saying don't delete it at all because I will destroy the original track?

I will attempt to access the direct copies now

You should read the background thread for more information, but depending on the reasons for duplication there might be two physical copies of the files, one on on path, one on another, or there could be two entries in the library both connected to the exact same file. In the first instance you want to throw one copy away to free up space, in the second instance that would be disaster. If enough files are sent to the trash Windows can start permanently deleting things removing the chance of restoring them if it turns out they are needed. Backup before you do anything. My script can normally tell which type of dupe is which and make the correct clean-up action but I still recommend backing up first.
