You can copy style (including cell borders) using the menu items "Format > Copy Style" and "Format > Paste Style"
I think the cell border formatting controls are a pain so I avoid using them. If I have to do this often I would make a table with the the selection I want the store that in a template and cpy and paste style from there.

Create a Table Style from a table that you have previously set to have all black borders. Once you have done that you can quickly change any table's borders to black, and if you want to change the weight of a particular border in that table, it will already be black and all you will have to do is change the line weight.

erg. thanks wayne.
i bought excel for the mac because i am going to be doing a lot of spreadsheet stuff but after getting into it i am finding it will take some time. i do love the simplicity of numbers in many ways but i wish they would finish the last 10% of this software so i can use it more efficiently.
talk about a monkey at keyboard!
anyway, i think i ran into this once before:
i have formatted text and formatted cell outline (thin) and formatted cell underline (3 px) and i have selected the cells. now when i go to Format the Copy Style is greyed out.
can you help me figure out what i am doing wrong with this?

OK. maybe i am missing something but this need to pulldown to cell outline BLACK seems like a bug.
if i run a simple Bottom Edge > Line > 3 px it defaults to black. but if i do this for Inside Cells or Cell Outline it defaults to some grey or white an i have to pick a fourth option which is the color?
this seems buggy to me unless i am missing something...

i think i am misunderstanding you as i am reporting what appears to be buggy behavior in the software. this is where one thing behaves one way and another thing in another way and a third thing in a third way such that it appears that something is either NOT WORKING in my OS or in my software - or simply that the implementation is so sloppy that it is hard to understand why one thing behaves one way and another thing another way to such an extent that you think that there was either a problem with implementation and it was never fixed or there is something buggy or perhaps something you don't understand because it is all so complex.
i RARELY find looking in the help for this kind of item to be more than a ten to fifteen minute waste of time.
when you say "i suggest" are you trying to be funny or cute? or are you trying to help me streamline my usage of what appears to be confusing implementation of the workflow?
i mean - for instance - have you figured out any rhyme or reason as to what the DEFAULT COLOR is for the various border elements (left, right, bottom, outside -whatever)? i have these all over the map when i only want ONE (i.e. black) and i have asked this multiple times. it appears that an at least partial solution is to work with styles or some other workaround that eliminates totally the need to use the defaults and the pulldowns or the Inspector (ostensibly because no one can /control/ these). i mean, if there is a way to control how these things defaut i would like to know but short of that i need live help not some Numbers Help menu that is only describing some vague blanket explanation that half the time was written while the software was being coded or perhaps while the software was being released.
the aperture help is the same way. it is a totally generic explanation that basically should say "if we had implemented things in the way that we intended things would work like this however we never got around to tweaking things after the fact so there is a tiny (we are being modest here) discrepancy between actual usage and this generic somewhat idealistic help explanation".
i am saying i see something BUGGY in the defaults for all of these and the more i work with them the buggier they seem so i don't have time to report all of them. maybe there is a way to control them that i don't see? or maybe you can point me to somewhere specific in the Help (the most logical result is in a screenshot below) instead of generically saying search in the help.
what i am saying is that /generally/ speaking, the help lacks more than the software does when software is not understandable so saying i suggest searching the help is not helpful. you follow me?
and only fanboys try to state otherwise by avoiding a critical answer that will help users' workflow by implying that all is hunky-dory and simply explained in the help if you looked close enough.
i have looked in the help. is there a specific section of it that you are indicating i should review again - or...

yeah, so i will repeat the question. item 6 says: "To change the line color, Click the color well and select a color."
i am asking about what should be item 6A in the Numbers Help.
6A /should/ say "To set a well color default so you don't have to ALWAYS change a color EVERYTIME you have to use the Border Style functionality, right click on the well and select a color and click on DEFAULT. this way you can have a default color for your Border Styles.
OR 6A could say "Unfortunately there is no way to set default colors (we are working on this) and in the meantime please use a workaround for this that is explained <in this link>. we do understand that for those of you that work on this software for a full day that this is giving you two handed carpal tunnel and doubling your unbillable hours on the task so we hope to have this fixed ASAP."

Any statement that includes the word "should" is directed to the wrong audience here. Apple can make changes to the application; users generally cannot.
Use the Provide Numbers Feedback item in the Numbers menu in Numbers to send your feature request directly to Apple.

I was not being funny or cute. The question of borders in Numbers has been covered many times in the forums and it simply doesn't work they way you, or others, want. The people, like me, Jerry, Barry, Ian, Badunit, are all fellow users and have no ability whatsoever to affect change with the Numbers application.
Generally we try to provide something, when an elegant solution, a work around, or a cludge to solve a problem with in the constraint that we cannot make changes to Numbers since we are not the developers, nor do we have any more access than you do.
I hope you can understand this point. Here is a description af all the steps to change the border:
you can use the information or not but the fact is there is no way, other than what has previously been discussed, to save a default as you want. Barry has shown you the way to provide feedback. I hope you use it.
Wayne out for this thread.
