Anyone have experience with hooking up a linux machine to an Xsan? Any pitfalls or problems? Also interested in what version of linux and the type of hardware used. Thanks in advance.

    Bill,

No direct experience, but I have spoken at lengths with ADIC regarding StorNext on Linux and any interopability issues. As you may or may not know, XSan is essentially the ADIC product recompiled for OSX (Apple engineers are responsible for the build and packaging, ADIC just supplies the source). I don't see that there would be any issues - I'm currently running 40 XSan servers right now, so I know that the scalability issues have finally been sussed out. Interopability is unverified in my book.

You'll either need to use StorNext for the MDCs (i.e. Windows or Linux servers) or buy StorNext's FX product, which enables Windows and/or Linux clients to be clients on an OS X MDC-controlled Xsan.

Just wanted to add: I use StorNext on SGI and it works fine with XSan MDCs. I know that Linux is supposed to work as well, but ADIC is having a lot of trouble with the 2.6 Kernel, specially when resharing the SAN via NFS. You should contact them first...

We bought a single StorNext FX license for unix, about 2K Euros for the license + VAT. Unfortunately the SGI can not NFS mount from OSX (a BSD Bug!) and therefore it was necessary. You still have to add the FC Card for the SGI...
