Those must have been shortcuts assigned by the school. They are not part of the operating system per se. I hate it when people sell Macs, and don't follow my instructions to clean up their unnecessary software. Hopefully you got the original discs. If not, you may need to call AppleCare and ask to speak to a software specialist and give them your serial number.

These will be shortcuts to different partitions on the hard drive.
The best thing to do with a computer purchased second hand is to erase the hard drive and install the operating system again. You will have the computer (in software terms) as good as new.
So back up any user files and undertake a clean install as described here:
