Q: How to take care of Macbook Pro battery?

Hi. I just got a new Macbook Pro battery 13'' for college. I really like it so far, but my only concerns are in how I should take care of it. I want to make sure I can use the laptop for a long time.

They said I can do roughly 1000 charge cycles. Does that mean 1000 full charge cycles (from 0 to 100 percent)? If not, at what percentage should I let my battery fall down to before recharging back up fully.

Is it also bad to keep the battery always charged in? I don't want to keep using cycles meaninglessly so I think keeping it charged when I'm at home may seem convenient, especially when watching videos.

And does it damage the battery to completely discharge it? I did it by accident when I tried calibrating the battery. However, my laptop did not end up going to sleep, but rather shutting down, indicating that it was actually a built-in battery.

If you could help answer any of these questions, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

You're not wrong - it all depends on what you're doing and your settings.

I think that screen shot was taken before I upgraded my Macbook Pro.

Here's a screen shot of the same Macbook Pro with 16GB of RAM and 240GB SSD.

    thanks for reply.

    i also have another question

i have macbook pro late 2011. when i charge it, and it just can only go up to 99% (it has 100 cycles). should i keep it plugg in since there is information that battery will keep charging until it reaches 100%? so if i keep it plugg in it would constantly charge and my battery might go bad?

once in a while, my Macbook will stop charging at 99%.  it doesn't really bother me since I use it under it's own power once in a while and will reach 100% at times.

it will not harm your battery if you decide to keep it plugged in.  Just don't leave it plugged in for a week straight.

if you keep it plugged in, it will stop charging and once it's down to 94%, it'll charge it back up.

    good luck

are you saying that i just have to use 25% of the battery each day? then keep it plugg for the rest of the day?

You can do that if you want to.....

If you do it that way, it'll take you 4 days to complete a full cycle count.

Just don't keep it plugged in for weeks at a time.  I'm sure some will disagree but everyone has their own way of using their Macbooks.

as long as Bimmer 7 Series suggestion that we just need to unlugg the charger 2-3 times a weeks is fine. (i think what he means that we could pace out the time we unplugg. ie each 2 days i will unplugg it once. after 2 months i would use it untill it reaches 20%)

    Hi Bimmer 7 Series,

Very good tips in this thread - thank you.

I am curious - what is the battery 'health' of your batteries? Using the iStatPro dashboard widget, it tells me mine is at 84% after 237 cycles (Coconut Battery reports 83%, but I won't split hairs!). Just wondering how I am doing compared to your batteries... Not expecting to match, but I'd like to think I take a bit of care of my charging cycles.

    Cheers!

    Hello Bimmer,

Just one quick question. I accidentally let my battery on my Macbook Pro 13" drained to 0% thrice in 1-2 months. Is there any significant damage... say to the lifespan of the battery?

Probably the best thing to do to optimize your battery life is to take Apple's recommendation
