Q: Safari Login Page Launches when connecting to wireless network

Hi,

This is a really strange problem, or it seems it to me, and I'm not that familiar with Macs, even though I have one, so will explain it as best as I can.

When I connect to a wireless network, whether this is because the wireless has been out of range, switched off, or when my mac book wakes, Safarai launches a window trying to connect to http://vodafonemobile.wifi, with a popup login box stating "To view this page, you must log in to area “level_15_access” on vodafonemobile.wifi:80." Below is a screenshot.

If I cancel, sometimes it comes back, but either way, i'm still able to connect to the internet or browse the network etc, so it doesn't seem to effect performance, it's just really irritating.

I've tried resetting Safari, clearing the dns cache and changing proxy settings, I've also tried running console whilst I turn off and on the wireless, but there's nothing obvious it could be.

I need to add that I don't have anything vodafone on any of the networks I use, so I don't think it's that.

Your help would be really appreciated, if you need more info, let me know.

Thanks

Richard

Your screenshots did not properly post.

One thing you can quickly try is to create a new network location configuration. To do this, go to the System Preferences and choose "Network" (you will see the list of services like WiFi and Ethernet to the left). At the top of this panel you will see a drop down menu next to the word "Location." Select this panel and choose "Edit Locations." Then click the plus button to creat a new location, and then click "Done."

This action will have created a new network configuration that includes your default network ports and all associated settings. Click Apply to save the changes, and then connect to your WiFi network again.

With this new connection established, does the system still show the login prompt?

Sorry, just pasted the images, didn't insert them...

This is the screen I get when Safari launches (I don't get it when I go into Mail)

    Screen shot 2013-06-04 at 22.44.18.png

These are my Network Preferences, should I delete the Ethernet and Firewire as well?

    Screen shot 2013-06-04 at 22.47.23.png

These 3 networks are ok, they're mine, unless you think I should remove them as well?

    Screen shot 2013-06-04 at 22.50.12.png

I don't have anything in my 802.1 or proxies tab, is this correct?

    Screen shot 2013-06-04 at 22.50.26.png

    Screen shot 2013-06-04 at 22.50.34.png

I set up a Test location, and deleted all the networks and then added just the one network, and the window still came up when i opened the laptop.  Would rebooting help or is that just PCs?

    Many thanks

I have encountered the exact same problem.

A friends computer used a Vodafone mobile broadband router while abroad, and have had this problem ever since he got back.

When ever he reboots or otherwise connects to a WIFI his default browser, in his case Firefox, would open to:

vodafonemobile.wifi and he would get a popup similar to jul3's first picture.

This is not some "somehwhere in the world" router or login page, but infact his very own SpeedTouch TG585i router.

Which is explained by lookin in /etc/hosts where a line with "192.168.1.1 vodafonemobile.wifi" is added.

For what ever reason this cannot be removed. Or rather, you can. But when ever he reconnects to a network (or reboots) the line is re-added again.I have read in other forum threads that this can be due to VPN solutions, but he have none.

So the problem is really divided in two.

1 - Why does the hosts file revert

2 - why is the browser actually opening vodafonemobile.wifi

Both happens everytime he connects to a network.

There are no vodefone programs installed. Nothing that explains this.

No solution yet?  Driving me INSANE!!!  Every time my machine wakes from sleep or my network state changes vodafonemobi.wifi opens in my default browser.  Pain in the back!

    Hi

I had the same problem and found that if I uninstalled the Vodafone software that comes with the Mifi it stops prompting for you to login to the Vodafone Mobile Wifi.

To do this I turned off the Vodafone Mobile Wifi device and then plugged it into one of the USB drives. A screen will pop up that looks like this:

    Screen Shot 2013-07-16 at 11.54.26.png

Run the uninstaller (it told me to disconnect the device before continuing but every time I did that the Uninstaller would crash so I left the Wifi device connected and pressed continue anyway)

This should uninstall the Vodafone WiFi management software and hopefully solve your problem

@Jgmitche that seems to have solved the problem in my friends case.

We could usually provoke a popup by disconnecting and reconnecting to an unrelated WIFI.

Doing it after your suggestions seems to have fixed it. Hopefully its gone for ever now.

    Thanks. =)

Having the exact same problem as the other folks on this thread.  Used a dongle for a day in South Africa while traveling this summer.  Now anytime the computer awakens I get one to many vodafone mobile safari windows.  I have gone through all the steps mentioned thus far, incuding renaming the captive network assistant.  Unfortunately for me I do not have a vodafone mobile device to plug in to run the uninstaller.  In fact I cannot find any vodafone software on the machine.

Any further thoughts or guidance would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Peter

    Hi,

I managed to solved the problem.

Same as you, cpharrisjr, I was unable to find any vodafone software on the machine in question: I couldnt find anything even remotly related to vodafone.

The solution, and the only one afaik, is to have access to the dongle you used.

When you insert it into you Mac again, you get the autorun (if thats what it is called in Apple world, I'm really a Windows man myself), and it will acutally identify that you have their software installed. And allow you to uninstall it.

If you don't have access to the USB dongle anymore, you actually seem to be out of luck...

I had the exact same issue, I used to have a vodafone wifi hotspot, but now whenever I turn on wifi to connect to any network my browser opens this vodafonemobile.wifi page.  Like everyone else it was driving me crazy.  I just searched my machine using spotlight (command+space) for vodafone and it listed the uninstaller.

I ran the uninstaller and it seems to have done the trick!!

    Hey everyone

I had the same problem! Used one time only the vodafone internet USB something.... from a friend, and ever since this popup....

However - take a look at your Applications-Folder guys! At the very end (since alphabetically ordered) you'll find a folder name Vodafone. Inside this folder is the uninstaller klick on it, and it's gone.

This works unless you have trashed the vodafone-folder - then I would suggest to get the USB-internet-bas.... from whom ever you've had it and let it install again. You now should see the folder again where you can unistall/remove everything.

    Cheers

    This worked for me.

It seems like Vodafone's Mac driver is made by novamedia.de

    So:

    1. open the terminal and type

    sudo su

    give your password.

    2.

    mkdir /var/root/junk/

    mv  /usr/local/bin/VMRServer /var/root/junk/

    and

    3.

    mv /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/de.novamedia.VMRServer.plist /var/root/junk/

    4. Then if you feel like it, use "mv" command on all the below as illustrated above for VMRServer:

    /private/var/db/BootCaches/20B0A940-FBCA-4880-A74D-40988C242D7A/app.de.novamedia .DeInstaller.playlist

    5. sudo vi /etc/hosts

cursor to the line that says

              192.168.1.1     vodafonemobile.wifi

    press

              dd

    press

              esc :wq!

you have to do this at step 5 because VMRServer just recreates this entry if you delete it.

    6. type

              sudo reboot

I do use a vodafone mifi device and this is my login page.

To get ride of this page you have to run a uninstall using the vodafone software, any other sort of uninstall removes the software but leaves the command to login to the router everytime you connect.

What you need to do is download any of the vodafone Mifi router software, install it and then open the download again and use the uninstall supplied by Vodafone. That should sort you out.

Aaaaah CaiteDragon, you have made a very simple suggestion, and I am kicking myself for not thinking of it too.  I didn't have any software with which to run the uninstall as others had suggested, but stupid me, I didn't think of downloading it from the website so that I could then uninstall!  Simple.  Clever.  AND it's worked (crossing fingers and holding thumbs that it stays that way!)

Thanks to everyone for their help!  I wish I had better knowledge so that I could follow some of the steps suggested above - @johnostrowick, your steps would probably ensure I would never ever get it again but I'm just not confident in doing those things, and I'd be lost if I took a wrong turn...

But success!  Thanks to all who've spent time.  Hopefully Vodafone will stop this annoying feature.

Somehow the vodafone mifi adds its ip adress to the host file.

To remove this go to the terminal:

    type : sudo nano /private/etc/hosts

    and your password

remove the vodafone line and save

    exit

    Hi All,

I've been following this thread with interest, as I've been experiencing the same problem.

When I plug in the MiFi device and run the Unistaller, the Unistaller instantly crashes. Despite searching thoroughly, I cannot find a way of downloading the unistaller software from the internet.

Could somebody direct me to where I can download the uninstaller software, please?

    Thank you.
