I'm so glad I found this tonight as hubby's iPad 5 just shut down for no reason but the home + wake/sleep button trick worked after a couple of goes :-)

Thinking about it, i seem to recall having to do something similar a few years ago with my iPod

    thank you

Hopeful someone can help.  We bought a used Ipad 1 for our elderly Mom.  She only uses it to play solitaire and thats it.  So, received ipad-great condition, looked 9/10 cosmetically.  The ebay 45 day seller protection has passed (by only 5 days).  Anyway, this ipad is now a black screen, won't turn on, charge, nothing.  I connected it to itunes and it promted me with Itunes has detected your ipad is in recovery mode.  You must restore this ipad before it can be used with itunes.  I click OK, and restore/update.  It then extracts software and begins to restore ipad.  Problem is, after leaving it connected to my PC overnight it still reads

Preparing ipad software for restore..... In other words, just a continuous loop with no results.  Pressing home, sleep, etc provides no results either.  Is there anything else I can try before just tossing it in the trash?  It's not worth taking it to Apple.

    Thank you!

I have a similar situation.... my iPad died, but when I went to charge it again, it won't turn on. It has the battery symbol to indicate that it's charging, but it won't start up! I tried the home button/ sleep button trick like 20 times and nothing happened.... PLEASE help!

I have an original ipad (about 2 years old) and the home button stopped working about 6 months ago.  Apparently its another common problem but I got around it by enabling the virtual home button directly on the screen.  BUT now that my ipad also suddently won't power on, I can't tried the two button trick since my home button doesn't work.  Any other work around or ideas or am I just screwed?  It was working totally fine earlier today.

Thanks so much for the tip.  I had the black screen of death and held down the power and home buttons for about 10 secs and it came back to life!
